Here is my game-by-game summary for the 11 games I attended at the 2011 Las Positas Shootout.
I managed to see all 15 teams at least once. Also, I either noticed or was told of a few other results, and I've attached those results on the bottom of the page.
Canada 52, Los Medanos 46:
Ctr Joell Crawford had 12 pts, 4 rebs and 4 asts, and Canada committed just 4 turnovers for the entire game in a 52-46 win over Los Medanos.
Los Medanos jumped out to a 21-14 lead midway through the first half, but Canada closed the gap to three points at 27-24 at halftime. The Colts tied the score at 38 on a basket by Crawford with just under six minutes left.
It was tied at 44 when Crawford scored on a putback of his own miss with 26 seconds left to give Canada a 46-44 lead. A driving lay-up by PG Rich Azure just ahead of the final buzzer made it 48-44. A free throw by Crawford and a 3-pointer by SG Qaadir Ali in extra time clinched the win for Canada.
PF Brandon Wilhite had 9 pts and SF Zayne Kirkendoll had 8 for Canada. Ali had 6 pts, 5 rebs and 2 asts.
PG Emmanual Bradford led Los Medanos with 13 pts, and he also had 9 rebs and 2 asts. SF Zack Korby had 9 pts on 3 three-pointers, and Ctr Kris Gallop had 6 pts and a game-high 13 rebs.
American River 69, Foothill 68:
SF Jose Rodriguez had 18 pts and PG Josh Bonner came off the bench for 10 pts and 9 asts as American River rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to edge Foothill by a single point.
Both teams played extremely well, particularly on the offensive end; ARC shot 54% from the floor while Foothill shot 56%. And the statistics were extremely even; each team attempted 50 field goals, each made 6 three-pointers and each team committed 14 fouls.
Foothill held a 32-23 lead at halftime, and led by 12 early in the second half. But American River rallied, thanks largely to Bonner, who had 8 of his assists in the second half. A 3-point play by American River SF Bryson Bryant tied the score at 46.
It was tied at 65 at the end of regular time, but a basket by Ctr Kyle Jackson gave ARC a 67-65 lead. Foothill SF James Weimer hit a 3-pointer to put the Owls in front, 68-67. Then Rodriguez was fouled and made the winning free throw to get ARC to the target score of 69.
SG Mardell Thompson also had 10 pts for American River, and SF Emilio Maltos had 9 pts. Jackson had 8 pts, 5 rebs and 2 blocked shots.
SG Jordan Ruedy led Foothill with 17 pts, and he also had 3 asts and 3 steals. Weimer and PG Ryan Cali had 10 pts each. Ctr David Fullenwiley had 5 pts plus 6 rebs, 4 asts and 3 steals.
Reedley 60, Mendocino 56:
Ctr Delvon Henderson had 21 pts, including the game-clinching slam dunk, and 9 rebs to lead Reedley to a four-point win over Mendocino.
Mendocino jumped out to a 10-point lead midway through the first half, but Rreedley cut the margin to five points at the break and took a lead early in the second half. Reedley pushed its lead to seven points at 41-34 before a 9-0 Mendocino run put the Eagles back in front, 43-41.
Mendocino Ctr Nick Hodge hit a 3-pointer at the end of regular time to give the Eagles a 56-54 lead. But Reedley outscored Mendocino, 6-0, in extra time, with Henderson scoring four of those points and SG John Hedrington also tallying a basket for the winners.
Henderson had an outstanding overall game, going 7-for-10 from the floor for his game-high 21 pts and adding 9 rebs, 2 asts and 2 blocked shots. PG Kris Collins had 10 pts and SG Collin Stover had 9 pts, 3 rebs and 3 asts.
SF George Johnson led Mendocino with 20 pts and 12 rebs. Hodge had 16 pts, a game-high 13 rebs and 3 blocked shots. SG Emmitt Clark added 11 pts for the Eagles.
Contra Costa 40, West Valley 30:
SF Kenonte Ramsey had 15 pts and PF Bryse Pittman had 12 pts and 5 rebs as Contra Costa rallied for a 10-point win over West Valley.
West Valley led, 9-4, early on and held a slim 18-17 lead at halftime. The Vikings pushed the lead to five points at 26-21 early in the second half.
But then Contra Costa went on a 15-2 run to take control of the game. A driving lay-up by Pittman made it 34-28 and a free throw by SF Chris McFadden made it 36-28. Contra Costa led the rest of the way.
SG Leyton Peterson led West Valley with 8 pts. West Valley shot just 26% from the floor for the game and 18.5% in the second half, though the Vikings did manage to get 16 players into the game.
Sacramento 42, Contra Costa 37:
PF Bobby Barnes had 17 pts and SG DeSean Atkins and SF Che Salabarria combined to make all 7 of their field goal attempts as Sacramento won over Contra Costa in the final game on Saturday.
Sacramento led by seven points at halftime at 21-14, and scored the first six points of the second half to lead by 13. Contra Costa narrowed the gap to a single point at 38-37 after scoring the first five points of extra time, but never quite pulled even. Baskets by SG Izzy King and Salabarria finally clinched the win for the Panthers.
Barnes had his game-high 17 pts, Salabarria had 11 pts on 4-for-4 from the floor and Atkins had 8 pts on 3-for-3. Ctr Brandon McDowell had 4 pts and a game-high 9 rebs.
For Contra Costa, SF Kenonte Ramsey had a game-high 16 pts plus 5 rebs and 5 steals. PF Bryse Pittman came off the bench for 8 pts including a couple of 3-pointers.
Diablo Valley 59, Fresno 42:
In possibly the most-anticipated showdown of the event, Diablo Valley gained a small measure of revenge for last year's 78-72 loss in the regional final and won in unexpectedly-easy fashion over Fresno.
PG Brian Goins had 16 pts and 4 asts for the Vikings, which jumped out to a 19-4 lead in the early going and were never headed. DVC held a 34-20 advantage at the half, and pushed the margin to 21 points early in the second half, and was never threatened.
Goins went 7-for-9 from the floor for his game-high 16 pts. SF Ronnie Baker had 12 pts, including a pair of threes, and Ctr Rafael Carter had 10 pts and a game-high 8 rebs.
Fresno was led by PG Rodney Webster, who had 15 pts. Ctr Junior Morgan came off the bench for 11 pts.
Fresno 50, San Joaquin Delta 49:
Fresno saw a 17-point first-half lead disappear entirely, but thanks to some hot shooting by PG Shailo Leafa and a timely basket by Ctr Mike Crowley at the end of extra time, the Rams came away with a narrow victory over the Mustangs of Delta.
Still smarting after a thumping at the hands of DVC, the Rams came out with a purpose, starting the game with a 7-0 run and building a 27-10 lead late in the first half. At the break, Fresno still held a seemingly-comfortable 13-point lead at 28-15.
But in the second half, Delta rallied, cutting the margin to just six points at 29-23 after a 3-pointer by SG Dan Schwarzberg that capped an 8-1 run. And though Fresno held the lead through the rest of regular time, Delta stayed close and trailed by just five points at 46-41.
And in extra time, Delta got five straight points from SF Derrick Wofford to tie the game at 46. After a single free throw by Fresno SG Randall Jackson, Delta took its first lead of the game on a pair of free throws by SF Ryan Garner.
Fresno tied the score at 48 on a free throw by Crowley, but Delta Ctr Marcus Beaird then drew a foul and went to the line with a chance to win the game. He made the first free throw to give Delta a 49-48 lead, but missed the second.
And Fresno cashed in on its final opportunity, with Leafa passing the ball to Crowley under the basket for a lay-up that gave Fresno the 50-49 victory.
It should be noted that although Fresno has had some leads disappear in this event in past years under rather suspicious circumstances, it appears that this was not the case this time around. There was no evidence of the ghost of Jack Molinas in the building this year.
Leafa finished with 16 pts, including 3 threes, and one very important assist. Jackson had 11 pts and Ctr Junior Morgan had 9 pts and 6 rebs. PG Rodney Webster had 5 pts and a game-high 5 asts.
For Delta, Wofford led the way with 13 pts, 4 rebs and 2 asts. Garner had 9 pts. Ctr Jerrell Green had 6 pts plus game-highs of 9 rebs and 4 blocked shots.
Diablo Valley 68, Ohlone 53:
PG Brian Goins and SF Ronnie Baker scored 15 points each as Diablo Valley wrapped up a perfect 4-0 weekend and successfully defended its unofficial championship with a 68-53 rout of Ohlone.
DVC started the game with an astounding 19-0 run, running off 16 straight points in the game's first five minutes without committing a single turnover. A Baker 3-pointer made it 19-0, and Ohlone never threatened the rest of the way.
The win gives DVC an 8-game winning streak in the Las Positas Shootout. The Vikings were crowned the unofficial champions in 2010 after also going 4-0, with Goins earning M.V.P. honors.
Goins finished wtih 15 pts, 3 asts and 2 steals to earn M.V.P. recognition for the second straight season. Baker had 15 pts, including 3 threes, plus 3 rebs, 2 asts and 3 steals to earn a berth on the all-tournament team. SG Bobby Syvanthong had 12 pts, 7 asts and 3 asts, and PF Tyrelle Phillips had 12 pts, 3 rebs and 3 asts for the Vikings.
For Ohlone, SG Mikheal McKinney led all scorers with 21 pts on 7-for-12 from the floor, and he also had 3 asts and 2 steals. SF Warren Wright had 9 pts. 7-foot-3 Ctr Ring Ayuel had just 2 pts but had 4 rebs, 4 blocked shots and about a half-dozen shots altered.
American River 60, Napa Valley 43:
SF Jose Rodriguez had 15 pts and 6 asts and Ctr Kyle Jackson had 12 pts as American River led most of the way in a 60-43 win over Napa Valley.
American River held a narrow 12-10 lead midway through the first half, but then slowly pulled away to lead by a dozen at 27-15 late in the half. American River held a 40-25 lead midway through the second half. Napa Valley rallied to close the gap to eight points at 49-41, but then ARC finished the game with an 11-2 spurt to put the game away.
Rodriguez finished 6-for-9 from the floor and had three 3-pointers. PG Josh Bonner had 9 pts and 4 asts, and SG Mardell Thompson had 8 pts and 3 asts. PF Phil Peterson had 6 pts, 5 rebs and 3 blocked shots.
For Napa Valley, PF Joe Slocum led the way with 12 pts. Ctr Jordan Greenwell had 8 pts and a game-high 7 rebs.
Las Positas 61, Los Medanos 57:
SF Dylan Heath scored 15 pts including the go-ahead basket in extra time as Las Positas overcame an 11-point first-half deficit to post a 61-57 win over Los Medanos.
Las Positas took an early 8-4 lead on the strength of a pair of 3-pointers by PF Devonae Leach, but Los Medanos answered with a 16-1 run that gave the Mustangs a 20-9 lead after a pair of 3-pointers by SF Zack Korby.
Los Medanos held a 31-27 lead at the half, but Las Positas stayed close throughout the second half and took a 45-43 lead on a 3-pointer by PG Damarr Eagles with 8:09 left. The teams traded 3-pointers in the final seconds of regulation time, which ended with the score even at 57.
In extra time, Heath scored on a putback to give Las Positas a 59-57 lead. Then Eagles hit a jumper to lift the Hawks to the target score and clinch the 61-57 win.
Heath scored his 15 pts on 5-for-9 from the floor, and that included a pair of 3-pointers. Leach had 10 pts. Eagles had 8 pts on 3-for-3 from the floor with a pair of threes.
For Los Medanos, Korby led all scorers with 21 pts and had 5 threes. PF Eric Brown had 14 pts and 9 rebs, and SG Emmanual Bradford had 11 pts and 3 asts. Ctr Kris Gallop had 11 pts and a best-of-the-weekend total of 16 rebs.
Canada 66, Las Positas 44:
PF Brandon Wilhite had 12 pts and Ctr Joell Crawford had 9 as Canada won the final game of the 2011 Las Positas Shootout, pulling away late in what became a rout of the host Hawks.
This game was close most of the way, with the Colts holding a 36-28 lead at halftime. Las Positas got within a point at 40-39 early in the second half before Canada finished the game with what became a rather emphatic 26-5 run.
Thirteen different players scored for Canada in a true team effort. SF Qaadir Ali came off the bench for 7 pts plus a game-high 6 rebs and a team-high 4 asts as well as 2 steals.
For Las Positas, PG Jovante Evans and SF James Pugh each had 13 pts. Ctr Roy Rissas had 5 pts plus a team-high 5 rebs as well as 3 asts, 2 blocks and a steal. Coach Tony Costello rested most of his starters, giving some younger players a chance to play.
