Chabot @ Cabrillo, Nov 10th

#12 Chabot (1-0) had four scorers in double figures to overcome PF Maurice Miller's 33 pts and 11 rebs and beat host Cabrillo (1-1), 74-67 November 10th in Aptos. PF Marcus Caesar had 15 pts while SF Damien Mathieu had 13 pts and 8 boards for the Gladiators, who overcame an early 22-11 deficit to post the win.

Early on, it was all Miller. In the first 8 minutes, Miller made all 5 of his shots, including 3 threes, and grabbed 5 rebs to help Cabrillo to a 20-11 lead. A putback basket by Ctr Kevin Dyess pushed the Seahawks' advantage to 22-11 a few moments later.

But then Chabot rallied, tying the game at 26 and grabbing a 34-31 halftime lead on a basket by Caesar and a putback by Gurvis Phillips at the horn. Thanks in large part to a pair of threes and a layup by SF Brandon Allen, Chabot extended its lead to 63-49 in the second half and appeared to be in control of the game.

Then came the Cabrillo rally, and as expected, Miller was the key. A FG+FT 3-point play followed by a layup made it 63-56 with 4-1/2 minutes left. An acrobatic layup by PG Jeff Scott and a putback by Dyess made it 65-60 before a pair of FTs by Miller closed the gap to 3 at 65-62 with under 3 minutes left.

However, Chabot was not to be denied, and soon regained control. A driving FG+FT 3-point play by Caesar with 2:02 left made it 68-62. After a 3-pointer by Miller (that bounced in off the glass) made it 68-65 with 1:36 left, neither team scored again for about a minute. But after a rebound by Mathieu, Cabrillo was forced to foul. And freshman PG DeSean Smedley came up big, nailing 2 FTs to make it 70-65 with 36.5 seconds left. After a basket by Scott again closed the lead to 3 at 70-67, Cabrillo again fouled Smedley and again the freshman cooly nailed both FTs to restore Chabot's 5-point lead. Then Smedley stole the ball on Cabrillo's next possession, and passed to SG Ray Chavis. He was fouled and made both FTs to secure the win for Chabot.

For Chabot, there were a lot of positives: balanced scoring, overcoming an early deficit and claiming a road victory vs. a good conference foe. Plus, Chabot had just 11 turnovers on the night, and their guards nailed 6 clutch free throws in the final 36.5 seconds. Caesar led Gladiator scorers with 15 points, 12 of which came in the first half. Mathieu had a strong all-around game with 13 pts, 8 rebs, 3 asts, 2 steals and a blocked shot. Allen added 12 pts off the bench, and SG Jamil Muchell had 11 on 5/6 shooting. All 10 Chabot players had at least 2 points.

For Cabrillo, it was a magnificent performance by Miller. The muscular PF had 33 pts on 12/18 shooting, including 6 threes, and grabbed 11 rebs. But no other Seahawks reached double figures in scoring, and the home team committed 22 turnovers. Dyess had a strong game inside with 9 pts and a game-high 13 boards. SF Mateja Dicic came off the bench to add 8 pts. Scott dished out a game-best 7 asts.
