#2-ranked LA Trade Tech used its superior depth, topping Oxnard, 90-84, in a foul-filled game Wednesday afternoon in downtown LA.
Ctr Rico Myles led the way with 14 pts, 9 rebs, 3 asts, 3 blocks and 2 steals for the Beavers (2-0), who led virtually the entire game but could never really pull away from a stubborn Oxnard squad.
Oxnard (0-3) led 4-2 in the early going before a 3-pointer by PF Nick Pacitti put Trade Tech ahead and began a 13-0 run that saw the home team build an 11-point lead. But Oxnard narrowed the gap to a point at 21-20 and trailed by just 2 at 25-23. A 12-2 Trade Tech run pushed the lead to a dozen at 37-25, but Oxnard narrowed the gap back to 5 points at halftime at 42-37.
Myles scored on a putback early in the second half to make it 44-37, but then went to the bench with his fourth foul. Oxnard immediately closed the gap to two points at 44-42.
But then some Trade Tech reserves made their presence felt. PG Eric Fernandez scored at the end of a fast break, grabbed a steal and scored on a lay-up to push Trade Tech's lead to 48-44. Then SF Robert Summers made a pair of free throws and PF Tim Smith scored on a putback to make it 52-42.
Trade Tech led the rest of the way, never by fewer than 6 points, but Oxnard stayed close until the end despite having four players foul out. A spectacular one-handed jam by SG Joseph Morgan on an alley-oop pushed the lead to 10 at 86-76 and put an exclamation point on the win.
In all, there were 61 fouls called and the teams combined for 80 free throw attempts.
In addition to Myles, double-figure scorers for Trade Tech were Pacitti, who also had 14 pts, Morgan with 13 pts and SG James (J.R.) Lewis, who had 11 pts and a team-high 5 asts. Fernandez chipped in with 9 pts before fouling out late in the game. In all, twelve players scored for Trade Tech and a thirteenth, PF Jamal Clay contributed with 6 rebs.
For Oxnard, PG John Johnson played a very strong game, finishing with 17 pts, 10 asts and 5 steals. He also had 9 turnovers against the Trade Tech press, but his absence was most noticeable when he took a 90-second break, his only rest of the game, late in the first half.
A pair of Oxnard sharpshooters, SG Brandon Hames and SG Ryan McLucas, each had 17 pts and each had 4 threes. PF Bernard Burrell had 11 pts and 7 rebs for the Condors.
SF Jonathan Malloy had 5 pts, 4 asts and a team-high 9 rebs before fouling out and drawing a technical for a rare 6th personal foul with 7:55 left in the game.
