#10 Chaffey got off to a sizzling start, building a 20-point lead less than seven minutes into the game, and cruised to a win over LA Trade Tech at the Fullerton College Tournament Thursday night.
The CHP raced out of the gate, beginning with a 3-pointer by SG John Gilliam in the opening seconds, taking an 11-0 lead just 2:11 into the game after 3-pointers by PG Julian Nichols and PF Jeff Nibo. After a timeout by Trade Tech, Nichols made another 3-pointer to make it 14-0 less than 3 minutes in.
PF Aaron Fitts finally got Trade Tech on the board with a 3-pointer, but Chaffey continued the onslaught. A lay-up by Ctr Pape Atoumane Seck, a 3-pointer by Gilliam and another 3-pointer by Nibo made it 22-4. Two free throws by Nibo after a rebound made it 24-4 with 13:39 left in the first half.
After that, Chaffey (4-0) maintained a lead of between 15 and 22 points for the next 20-plus minutes of playing time. SF Devyn Sampson made a 3-pointer, Chaffey's 10th of the game, to push the lead to 22 points at 41-19 with 5:45 left in the first half.
Chaffey held a 47-29 lead at the break, but stopped making 3-pointers in the second half. LA Trade Tech (0-1) chipped away at the deficit, getting within 11 points when SG Donja Brooks made a short jumper and then scored on a lay-up after a steal by PF Jordan Watson. That made it 60-49 with 10:15 remaining, and the Beavers also trailed by 11 points at 68-57 with about 6 minutes to go.
But then Chaffey got a 3-pointer from Nibo - the Panthers' first trey of the second half, and that seemed to stop the Trade Tech rally. Ctr Adom Jacko converted an alley-oop pass from Nichols for a slam dumk to make it 73-58. Chaffey tried another alley-oop pass to Gilliam moments later but some pass interference by Trade Tech resulted in a foul and an injury to Gilliam. Jacko took Gilliam's place at the free throw line and made the two resulting foul shots to make it 75-58 with 4:51 left. A 3-pointer by Nibo made it a 20-point game again at 78-58 with 3:34 left, sealing the win for Chaffey.
Nibo finished with a game-high 26 pts, including 5 threes, and 9 rebs. Gilliam had the game's only double-double with 18 pts, including 3 threes, plus 10 rebs, 4 asts and 3 steals. Jacko just missed a double-double with 17 pts and 9 rebs. Nichols had 7 pts and a game-high 8 asts.
For Trade Tech, SF Everett Osborne had 16 pts and 9 rebs, both team-highs. Fitts had 12 pts, including 3 threes, and 5 rebs. PF Andre Harris came off the bench for 12 pts and 5 rebs.
