Ryan Swain scored 23 pts, including the final four points of overtime, to lift #3 Fresno to an 88-84 win over #14 West Hills in the consolation championship of the Fresno tournament Sunday afternoon.
Swain broke an 84-all tie with a lay-up off a pass from James O'Neal, who drew his 11th assist from the play, with 22.5 seconds left. Then after West Hills' Justin Senou missed a free throw, the front end of a one-and-one, Swain grabbed the rebound. He was fouled immediately and made both resulting free throws with 7.2 seconds left to push Fresno's lead to four points and clinch the win.
It was a closely-contested game between Central Valley Conference rivals, and neither team led by more than 7 points. Fresno (4-2) took that 7-point lead after a 3-pointer by Swain made it 61-54 midway through the second half.
West Hills (2-4) answered with a 9-0 run, taking a 63-61 lead on a driving lay-up by Senou with 8 minutes to go. The lead went back and forth the rest of the way.
West Hills sent the game to overtime when Darren Buckles scored off a pass from Tre'Shawn King-Dunbar with 24.8 seconds left in regulation time. After a Fresno turnover with 4.1 seconds left the Falcons had a chance to win it in regulation, but missed a 3-pointer just as the horn sounded.
Swain finished with a team-high 23 pts, on 7-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the line, and added a team-high 7 rebs plus 4 asts and 2 steals. O'Neal had 16 pts and a game-high 11 asts. Nick Hilton had 15 pts, including 4 threes; Swain and O'Neal also each made 4 threes and the Rams made 15 threes in all. Fresno won despite being without leading scorer Dejon Burdeaux (concussion) and despite losing starting center Kyle Ingram in the first half after a hard collision under the basket.
For West Hills, Khayri Washington came off the bench and poured in a game-high 25 pts, including 3 three-pointers, while adding 7 rebs, 3 asts and 3 steals. Buckles had 16 pts and Senou had 14 pts, 6 rebs, 7 asts and 3 steals. King-Dunbar came off the bench for 7 pts, 7 asts and 2 steals.
