Glendale 64, LA Pierce 63

Ctr Durwin Williams did it all for Glendale (3-0), scoring 29 pts, grabbing 14 rebs and blocking a shot in the final seconds to preserve a 64-63 win over host LA Pierce (0-3) November 17th.

Williams was the only Vaquero to hit double figures in scoring, and the only Vaquero to garner more than 4 rebounds. His 2 FTs with 2:05 to play proved to be the winning margin. And his block on Ctr Steve Saunders in the waning seconds of the game allowed Glendale to maintain its narrow 1-point lead. After the block, Williams went to the floor to grab the loose ball but, realizing the possession arrow pointed Pierce's way, got rid of the ball before he could be tied up. By the time Pierce's Arman Shatrang corralled the ball and called timeout, just 0.3 seconds remained. The Brahmas were unable to get off a shot in the final fraction of a second, ending the game.

Glendale appeared to be in command, taking a 10-point halftime lead and pushing their edge to 35-23 early in the second half. But then a Pierce rally, sparked by a pair of jumpers by Shartrang and bolstered by a pair of buckets by SF Richard Jenkins, cut the margin to 1 at 40-39. And Pierce later got a pair of threes from backup PG Kevin Hiraiwa, the second of which put them ahead 52-47.

Then came a Glendale rally, led by Durwin Williams, of course. The lanky Center scored a close-in basket to put the Vaqueros back ahead, 56-54, and scored on a KG spin move to make it 58-54 moments later. A steal and bucket by PG D.J. Wyatt lengthened Glendale's lead to 60-54 with under 5 minutes left, again seemingly putting the Vaqueros in control.

But Pierce had one more rally left and closed the gap to a point with 3:40 to play. A basket by Shartrang and a jumper by Hiraiwa on a feed from Shartrang closed the gap to 60-59. Glendale extended the lead back to 3 on a give-and-go fast break play with D. Williams feeding Rafael Becerra for the layup, but Pierce responded with a bucket by Saunders to make it 62-61. Then D. Williams sank the 2 FTs with 2:05 left to make it 64-61. Jenkins scord a basket with 53 seconds left to make it 64-63. Pierce had two other golden opportunities to tie or take the lead, but Shartrang missed 2 FTs with 11.9 seconds left. SG Yancy Clark grabbed the rebound and, after a timeout, Pierce got the ball to Saunders. But then came D. Williams' game-saving block just in front of the rim, giving Glendale the win.

D. Williams led all scorers with 27 pts on 9/17 shooting. SG Mike Newton had 9 pts for Glendale, and PF Tyler Rose added 8 pts and 4 rebs. PG Wyatt came off the bench to add 5 pts and 7 asts. Jenkins led Pierce with 17 pts on 9/13 shooting. Jenkins and Saunders each had 8 boards. Shartrang finished with 7 pts and 4 asts.
