SF Austin Ramljak scored 31 pts, Ctr Corey Hall scored 26 and PG Zelmico Harmon scored 23 as Ventura won a highly entertaining game over Long Beach in the first round of the 17th Annual Irvine Valley College Classic Thursday afternoon.
Ventura (2-2) led, 50-44, at the end of a fast-paced first half in which the teams combined for 91 shot attempts. The Pirates built a 10-point lead at 29-19 after a 3-point play by Harmon, only to see Long Beach (0-3) answer with an 11-0 run to take a 30-29 lead on a 3-point play by SG Imani Hall. But Ventura went right back into the lead, 33-30, and held a 6-point advantage at halftime.
Ventura pushed the lead back to double figures early in the second half after two Harmon free throws made it 58-48. The margin grew to a dozen points at 64-52 after a Ramljak 3-pointer just less than six minutes into the half.
Long Beach rallied to within eight points at 64-56 on a 3-point play by PG Raynard Tyler on which Harmon picked up his 3rd foul. Then Harmon picked up his 4th foul moments later, with 12:43 left.
Though Harmon went to the bench briefly he returned midway through the half, and he never picked up his 5th foul. Hall's thunderous slam dunk with just over 11 minutes left made it 72-58, and Long Beach never got the deficit below 7 points the rest of the way.
Ramljak made 10 of 16 shots for the game, including 6 of his last 7, and had 4 three-pointers. Hall was 10-for-14 and also had a game-high 11 rebs for the double-double, and Harmon made 13 FTs and dished out a game-high 6 asts.
Ctr Tyler Tuliau led the Vikings with 20 pts, 9 rebs and 3 blocked shots, and Tyler had 9 pts and a team-high 5 asts. SF Robert Mandingo had 13 pts and 3 steals, SG Brandon Moore had 12 pts and Ctr Holsey Johnson had 11 pts and 6 rebs off the bench.
