SG Bobby Sharp of Santa Rosa put on a shooting exhibition with 31 pts on 10-for-16 with 6 threes to lead #8 Santa Rosa to an easy 97-66 win over Lassen in the Third Place game of the 8th Annual Fresno City College tournament Saturday afternoon.
Sharp scored 23 of his points in the first half, helping stake Santa Rosa (4-2) to a 56-32 lead at the break, and the Bear Cubs were never threatened in the second half.
Sharp gave Santa Rosa an early 17-10 lead after a 4-point play, but Lassen (4-3) rallied to cut the deficit to two points at 25-23. The Cougars again trailed just two points a little later at 30-28.
But then Santa Rosa went on a 26-4 run to end the half to take control of the game. PF Brian Johnson made the first of two free throws with 3:52 left in the half to make it 39-30. He missed the second, but he grabbed the offensive rebound, tapping the ball out to SF Xavier McCall, who got the ball back to Johnson for a lay-up that made it 41-30. Then SF Connor Gillett scored off a pass from Johnson to make it 43-30.
Sharp kept the run going with a lay-up off a pass from McCall and a three-point play off a pass from Johnson to make it 48-30. A basket by Johnson off a pass from McCall with 1:20 left made it 50-30. SG Alec Kobre split two free throws to make it 51-30. Sharp hit a 3-pointer as the halftime buzzer sounded to make it 56-32 at the break.
As the second half began, Sharp and Santa Rosa continued to widen their lead. Sharp hit a mid-range jumper and a 3-pointer to make it 61-32. He was fouled attempting a 3-pointer a bit later and made all three free throws to make it 66-35 with 16:21 left. Then PG Max Fujii joined in with a 3-pointer and a runner to make the score 71-35, at which point the rout was on.
Sharp not only led all scorers with his 31 pts, but he added 4 rebs, 3 steals and an assist while not committing a single turnover or foul. Gillett came off the bench for 15 pts, 7 rebs and 5 asts. They were the only two Bear Cubs to reach double digits, but the entire team played well, as evidenced by their 53% shooting from the floor and low total of 7 turnovers for the game, two of which came in the final minutes with the deep reserves on the floor.
For Lassen, SF Lawrence Melton had 18 pts and SF Sammy Allen Jr. came off the bench for 15. But the Cougars are off to a solid start with four wins already for first-year coach Devin Aye. The son of Chabot coach Denny Aye and younger brother of Imperial Valley coach Tyson Aye has already quadrupled Lassens win total from all of last year under the previous administration.
