Eric Patten scored 16 pts and Cuyamaca overcame a sluggish start and eventually held on for a 4-point victory over PCC rival Imperial Valley in a consolation game at the Irvine Valley Classic on Friday.
Cuyamaca (3-4) started out so poorly that coach Rob Wojtkowski subbed out his starting lineup and then two of his reserves early on, using all 12 players on the roster in the first 3:11 as Imperial Valley (1-6) jumped out to an 11-2 lead.
The starters re-entered at the 15:19 mark and soon cut the margin to five, but Imperial Valley stretched its lead to 10 points at 24-14 after a 3-pointer by Marquis Golden with just under 8 minutes left in the first half.
Then Cuyamaca found its rhythm, going on a 19-4 run to take a 33-28 lead late in the half. Patten scored off a pass from Shai Stevenson to get the Coyotes within a point, then split a pair of free throws to tie the score at 26 with 2:49 left in the half. Then he split another pair of free throws 27 seconds later to give Cuyamaca a lead it would hold the rest of the game.
After leading, 34-29, at the half, Cuyamaca stretched its lead to 10 points at 39-29 as Imperial Valley missed its first 7 shots of the second half.
But Imperial Valley never let Cuyamaca pull away. A 3-point play by Golden brought Imperial within 3 points at 39-36 with 13:43 to play and though the Arabs never caught up the margin was 4 points numerous times after that. Finally Brandon Martinez scored off a pass from Rick Cesena with 16.3 seconds left to bring Imperial Valley within 2 points at 58-56.
But the rally was too late. Imperial Valley had little choice but to foul, and Cuyamaca's Jon Irving made a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to close out the scoring and clinch the win for the Coyotes.
Patten led the winners with his 14 pts. Irving had 12 pts and 3 steals, and Spencer Smith had 11 pts, including Cuyamaca's only 3-pointer, plus 6 rebs, 4 asts and 2 steals.
Golden led Imperial Valley with 16 pts, and he also had 3 rebs, 5 asts and 2 steals. Perry Cromwell had 12 pts and 6 rebs, and Martinez came off the bench for 10 pts and 5 rebs. Eugene Rice had 6 pts and a game-high 10 rebs.
