Allan Hancock 74, Bakersfield 69

Four players scored in double figures, including SF Abe Millsap, who flirted with a triple-double, as Allan Hancock edged Bakersfield, 74-69, in the Third Place game of the 7th Annual Fresno City College Tip-Off Tournament Sunday afternoon.

This one was close all the way with neither team ever building more than a single-digit lead. Hancock held Bakersfield to just two points over a key six-minute stretch in the second half, taking a 60-53 lead with 3:53 left, and made 7 of 9 free throws in the final minute so secure the win.

Hancock (4-2) started the game with a 10-2 run, helped by Bakersfield missing its first 8 shots of the game. The Renegades took an 18-17 lead on a 3-pointer by SF Aubrey Ball with just over seven minutes left in the first half, and Bakersfield (3-3) had a 25-21 lead after a 3-pointer by PG Gerald Bates.

Bakersfield led, 29-27, when PF Duncan Schramm was assessed his second technical foul of the game on an elbowing foul (his first tech was for offering his opinion of a loose-ball foul) and disqualified with 1:24 left in the first half. SG Jordan O'Byrne made both technical free throws and PF Jordan Washington made a 3-pointer to give AHC a 32-29 lead, and the Bulldogs led, 34-31, at halftime.

When the second half began, Hancock extended its lead to 45-36 after a basket by PF Yasin Vernaza with 14:24 left. But Bakersfield answered with a 10-0 run, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers by Ball that gave the Renegades a 46-45 lead. Hancock went back in front, 50-46, after a 3-pointer by O'Byrne, but Bakersfield answered with five straight points to take a 51-50 lead with 9:40 left on a steal & lay-up by Bates.

Then came the Bakersfield cold streak, however, and over the next six minutes Hancock extended its lead to 60-53. Vernaza made a pair of free throws, SF Kenny Grant scored on a lay-up and O'Byrne made two free throws to make it 56-51. After a lay-up by Ball got Bakersfield within three at 56-53, Grant hit a short jumper and Millsap made 2 free throws to make it 60-53 with 3:53 left.

Bakersfield got within four points at 62-58, but never got any closer and was forced to foul in the final minute in an attempt to rally. But PG Alex McNeil, Grant and Millsap combined to make 7 of 9 free throws, more than enough to hold on for the win.

O'Byrne led AHC with 17 pts, while Vernaza had 13 pts and 13 rebs. Millsap had 11 pts and game-highs of 14 rebs and 8 asts, earning a spot on the all-tournament team. Grant came off the bench for 15 pts.

For Bakersfield, Ball led all scorers wtih 34 pts and added 5 rebs and 3 asts. Bates had 16 pts, 3 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals. But no other Renegade had more than 6 points.
