PF Marcus Hall had 23 pts and PG Alex Perez had 11 pts and 12 asts as Fresno thrashed preseason #1-ranked San Francisco, 97-71, in the championship game of the 7th Annual Fresno City College Tip-Off Tournament Sunday evening before a throng of enthusiastic supporters.
It was quite a performance. CCSF is the defending state champ, and was ranked #1 in the state in the preseason poll. CCSF also beat Fresno City, 82-73, in the season opener for both teams earlier this month. And though Fresno edged CCSF, 107-103 in this tournament last year, handing the state champs their only loss of the season, that game was extremely close and some wondered if the boisterous home crowd affected the outcome.
This time there was no doubt. Fresno (5-1) went on a 12-0 run midway through the first half to take a 19-9 lead, and from there the lead just grew. Fresno shot 55% from the floor for the game with just 12 turnovers, and after a 9-0 run to start the second half the only question was just how big the margin would be. And it could have been worse if not for the 38 personal fouls called against Fresno, resulting in 50 free throws for CCSF; San Francisco ended up getting more than half its points from the free throw line.
San Francisco (4-2) led, 9-7, before the 12-0 run. A basket by PF Michael Crawley made it 33-19 with 6:38 left in the half. The Fresno lead reached 19 points in the first half, as 6-10 Ctr DeAndre Medlock down a slam dunk that made it 47-28.
CCSF cut the deficit to 15 points at 47-32 at halftime after pair of free throws by SF Delon Wright and Ctr Stuart Wesonga in the final minute of the first half. And though the deficit was still significant, there was a chance a team as talented as CCSF might be able to make the comeback.
Once the second half started, however, Fresno went on a 9-0 run to take complete control of the game. A putback jam by Medlock made it 56-32 less than two minutes into the half as CCSF missed its first 5 shots and had 4 turnovers on its first 9 possessions of the half.
For Fresno, Hall had 23 pts on 9-for-13 from the floor. Perez was just oustanding, finishing with 11 pts and a game-high 12 asts. He also had 3 steals, and had just one turnover, a dubious double-dribble after one of his steals, and was named to the all-tournament team. Crawley had 16 pts on 7-of-8 from the floor and Medlock had 10 on 5-for-6. SF Tomas Sanchez had just 2 pts but was named tourney M.V.P. for his outstanding play in wins over LA Trade Tech and Bakersfield earlier in the tournament.
For San Francisco, Wright had a nice line of 18 pts, 3 rebs, 3 asts, 3 blocks and 2 steals. PF Raysean Hairston had 11 pts but was the only other CCSF player to score in double digits. The 26-point margin was the worst loss for CCSF since at least 2005.
