LA Pierce 60, Glendale 53

J.R. Williams scored 19 pts and added 8 rebs and 7 asts, and Quincy Moore made three key plays in the final 25.5 seconds for LA Pierce in a 60-53 win over visiting Glendale in a WSC crossover game Thursday in Woodland Hills.

Pierce (2-2) used a 12-0 first-half run to take a 26-13 lead, and led 28-14 over a Glendale (0-2) team that was not only without its longtime head coach Brian Beauchemin (out for the season following hip surgery) but struggling to get by with essentially a 6-man rotation.

The Brahmas led by 10 at the half, 37-27, but Glendale started the second half with an 11-1 run, tying the game at 38 on a 3-pointer by Juwann Thomas with 12:50 left in the game.

And despite being rather shorthanded, and despite both Thomas and Michael Carter missing time due to leg cramps in the final few minutes, the Vaqueros stayed close the rest of the way.

Moore and Jordan Fuller made 3-pointers to put Pierce back into the lead, and Kaelen Hicks scored on a tip-in to make it 46-38. Glendale answered with a 6-0 spurt, but Williams scored on a lay-up after a steal to give Glendale a 54-47 lead.

Glendale got within four points when Thomas hit a long 3-pointer with 1:30 left to make it 56-52, and Carter split two free throws with 52.6 seconds left after a steal to make it 56-53.

Pierce had the ball, and as the shot clock wound down Devron Reynolds tried a jumper that missed. But Moore coralled the rebound with 25.5 seconds left. Glendale fouled immediately, but it was only the Vaqueros' 5th team foul of the 2nd half so no free throws resulted.

After a timeout, Pierce's Hicks inbounded the ball to Moore, who scored on a lay-up with 24 seconds left to make it 58-53. Then Moore stole the ball back and fed Williams for a lay-up with about 10 seconds left to make it 60-53 and clinch the win for the Brahmas.

Williams finished with a team-high 19 pts, including 3 threes, and added 8 rebs a game-high 7 asts and 2 steals. Hicks had a double-double with 12 pts, a game-high 11 rebs, 3 asts and 3 steals. Antone Datcher had 10 pts and 6 rebs, and Fuller came off the bench for 8 pts. Moore had 5 pts, 4 rebs, 2 asts and 3 steals, but came up big when it mattered most.

For Glendale, Thomas scored a game-high 20 pts including 4 threes. Christopher Hines had 15 pts, and Mitchell West had 9 pts and 9 rebs. Carter came off the bench and scored just one point but dished out a team-high 6 asts.
