SD Mesa 74, Allan Hancock 72

San Diego Mesa (1-5) posted its first win of the season, overcoming a 13-point second-half deficit to edge Allan Hancock (2-4), 74-72, in a consolation game at Bakersfield College Saturday November 24th.

PF Lamar Thomas had 23 pts and SG Derrick Ubeze had 22 to lead the Olympians. PG Pat Magno added 14 pts. And SF Dequonta Webster had a solid all-around game with 9 pts, 6 rebs and a game-high 5 asts.

Mesa began the game strongly, jumping out to an 18-9 lead early on before an 10-0 Hancock run put the Bulldogs ahead. The lead went back and forth the rest of the half, with Hancock holding a 35-32 edge at the break.

In the second half, Hancock built a 62-49 lead at one point but saw it all evaporate in the final few minutes. A FG+FT 3-point play by Udeze after a steal by SF Chris Reed put Mesa ahead, 71-70. After another steal by Reed, Thomas made a pair of free throws to make it 73-70. And after a steal by Magno, he made a free throw to make it 74-70 with 47.4 seconds remaining.

After a pair of free throws by SG Dwayne Johnson with 22.2 seconds left made it 74-72, Hancock got one last chance to tie the game or take the lead after an offensive foul on Thomas gave the Bulldogs the ball with 18.7 seconds left. But SG Mike Cutino missed a 3-point try and SF Samson Gebreberhane missed a putback try in the final seconds.

Gebreberhane led the Bulldogs with 20 pts, 6 rebs and 4 asts. PF Taylor Pruett had 14 pts and 6 rebs and SG Jonathan Ramirez had 12 pts, 4 rebs, 3 asts and 5 steals before fouling out with 1:02 left.
