Ctr Clarence Matthews scored 18 pts and grabbed 11 rebs to lead LA City (5-0) to a 54-41 win over Cuyamaca (2-5) in the first round of the Citrus Tourney. SF Chad McKenzie came off the bench to add 12 pts, 7 rebs and 6 asts for the Cubs, who led virtually the entire game.
After Cuyamaca took a 4-3 lead on a pair of jumpers by PF Ronnie Simpson, LA City scored the next 7 points to take a 10-4 lead. McKenzie had a pair of baskets while Matthews had a FG+FT 3-point play on the 7-0 run. But Cuyamaca struck back to tie the game on a three by SG Nate Reed, a basket by SF Erik Johnson and a driving layup by PG Marlon Pierce. However, LACC finished the half strong to take a 20-16 lead at intermission.
In the second half, LACC scored the first 12 points of the half to take control of the game. PG Matt Patience hit a leaning, desperation three at the end of the shot clock about 6-1/2 minutes into the half to finally break Cuyamaca's drought, but by that time LACC was in command of the game.
In addition to Matthews and McKenzie, LACC got double-figure scoring from PF David Cornwell (11 pts) and SF Caey Gordon (10 pts, 6 rebs). Simpson led Cuyamaca with 15 pts. But Cuyamaca shot just 33% from the floor and grabbed just 22 rebounds in the game.
