Compton 75, Chaffey 73

#3 Compton (4-0) jumped out to a 19-point second-half lead and then managed to hang on against a patented Chaffey from-the-clouds rally to win, 75-73. PG Kevin Thomas led the Tartars with 16 pts and dished out 7 asts, while SG Wesley Washington had 13 pts and 6 asts before fouling out with 6:27 to play. Ctr Darron Brown came off the bench to add 12 pts and 7 boards for the winners.

Compton survived a hot start by Chaffey, overcoming a 22-16 deficit with three quick baskets by SF Jimmy Tobias to tie the game with 8:26 left in the first half. The Tartars extended their lead to double digits on a driving layup by Thomas near the end of the first half, but three quick buckets by PF LaRon Williams allowed Chaffey to close the gap to 41-34 at the break.

In the second half, Compton pushed out to a 19-point lead at 61-42 before Chaffey began its comeback. The Panthers made it 67-63 with just over 3 minutes left, but could never quite get the lead back. Compton's PF Joe Walker scored on a putback, and Thomas and Brown executed a perfect give-and-go to put Compton back ahead by 8 at 71-63. A running layup by SG Chris Brown brought Chaffey back to within 5, and the Panthers had the ball back when SG Nick Carter stole the ball, deflecting the ball to Walker who fed Thomas for the layup to make it 73-65.

SG Ronnie Bullock nailed a three for Chaffey with 47.2 seconds left to make it 73-68 and SF Victor Michel nailed a three with 25.5 seconds left to make it 73-71, but that was as close as Chaffey would get. Walker twice got rebounds, was fouled and made 1-2 FTs each time to push Compton's lead back to 75-71 in the final seconds. Michel scored on putback after a Brown miss as the horn sounded to account for the final score.

Michel led all scorers with 20 pts, while Williams added 16 and 8 rebs for Chaffey. Ctr Brandon Price had a solid game with 12 pts and 7 boards. But the starting backcourt for Chaffey shot a combined 3-for-23 and the Panthers shot just 37% overall from the floor. That more than offset Compton's woes from the free throw line (5/16 - 31.3%) and troubles holding onto the ball (28 turnovers).
