SG Shaquille Hunter scored 13 pts, all in the 2nd half, and added 4 asts as Irvine Valley stayed unbeaten with a 57-46 win over visiting Mira Costa Tuesday night in Irvine.
Irvine Valley (6-0) went on a 19-4 run late in the first half to take a lead, a 13-2 run midway through the second half to push its advantage to 14 points and got back-to-back 3-pointers from SF Jimmy Golden and PG Ronnie Harris to clinch the win over the still-winless Spartans (0-5).
Things started well enough for Mira Costa, which entered coming off a narrow loss to Rio Hondo. Though the game was played at Irvine Valley's pace, the Spartans took a 13-6 lead midway through the first half.
But then Irvine Valley went on a 7-0 spurt to tie the game that eventually became a 19-4 run, taking a 25-17 lead late in the first half. PF Chris Porter scored on a 3rd-chance putback to tie the score at 15, and Irvine Valley never trailed again.
Ctr Andrew Bastien scored off a pass from Hunter to give IVC a lead, and scored on a Duncan-esque bank shot to make it 19-15. A Porter putback made it 21-15. A 3-point play by PF Austin Priest gave Irvine Valley a 25-17 lead with a 3-point play with 36.8 seconds left in the first half.
Mira Costa got a 3-point basket from PG Chuck Smith just ahead of the buzzer to end the first half to make it 25-20.
Ctr Geoffrey Frid scored the first five points of the second half to tie the score 25-25. PG Jalen Hall scored on a driving lay-up to put Irvine Valley back in front, but Mira Costa stayed close. After a driving lay-up by Smith about 6 minutes into the second half, Mira Costa trailed by just 3 points at 33-30.
But then Irvine Valley went on a 13-2 run to take control of the game. Hunter hit a 3-pointer and Harris stretched the lead to 38-30 with a baseline jumper. Another Hunter three made it 41-32. Two free throws by Ctr Declan Daly made it 43-32 with 7:01 left. Hunter dunked after a steal, drew a foul and made the free throw to complete the 3-point play and make it 46-32 with 6:08 remaining.
Mira Costa battled back one last time, cutting the deficit to seven points after a driving lay-up by Smith made it 47-40. But then Golden took a skip pass from Hunter and drained a 3-pointer from the left corner with about 4 minutes left, and almost exactly a minute later Harris hit a 3-pointer from almost exactly the same spot to make it 53-40 and seal the win for Irvine Valley.
Hunter led the Lasers with his 13 pts, and his 4 asts were a game-high total. Porter just missed a double-double with 9 pts and 9 rebs. Daly had 8 pts, 3 rebs and 3 steals, while Golden and Bastien each scored 7 pts.
For Mira Costa, Smith scored a game-high 17 pts and also had 3 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals. The 7-1 Frid posted a double-double with 11 pts and a game-high 12 rebs plus 2 blocked shots.
