SF Tommey Posey came off the bench to score 21 pts, including the game-winning basket with 20 seconds left, and grab a game-high 12 rebs and garner tourney MVP honors in leading #5 San Bernardino (5-1) to a 1-point win over host Moorpark (1-3) in the championship game.
SBVC trailed by 6 at halftime but took the lead when Moorpark missed its first 10 shots of the second half. The Wolverines held their lead until Moorpark rallied behind a 4-point play by PG Kevin Thrower followed by a three and a putback basket by SG Chad Acerboni and took a 77-74 with just over 6 minutes left.
The game see-sawed the rest of the way, and Moorpark took an 85-84 lead on a putback basket by Ctr Jeremiah Turner with 44 seconds left. After Posey's game-winning basket Moorpark had two more chances to win the game, but Acerboni missed a three with under 10 seconds left. However, the ball bounced out of bounds after several hands touched it and the Raiders were awarded the ball with 5 seconds remaining. But on the inbounds play, the ball was knocked away from Acerboni and Moorpark couldn't get another shot away before the buzzer.
SG Aaron Nixon scored 19 of his 21 pts, including 3 threes, in the second half for SBVC. PG Kevin Henderson had a strong all-around game with 7 pts, 7 rebs, 4 steals and a game-high 10 asts. Backup PG DeWayne Pettus chipped in with 13 pts (5/6 FGs) and 6 asts. Both Pettus and Henderson played much of the game together as SBVC used a small lineup to combat Moorpark's trapping, pressing tactics.
Turner led Moorpark with 25 pts and 11 rebs in a very strong performance. Four other Raiders reached double figures in scoring: Acerboni (13 pts), Thrower (12 pts, 4 asts), 3rd G Keith Lawrence (12 pts) and SF Tyler Carr (12 pts).
