SF Jerard Moret scored 20 of his game-high 25 pts in the first half, and added 10 rebs and 5 asts to lead #15 West LA (5-1) to a 101-89 win over visiting Barstow (0-6) Tuesday night in Culver City.
Barstow's press kept the pace lively, but also allowed West LA to get a lot of easy baskets; the Oilers shot 63% from the floor. And the Vikings ended up committing 31 fouls and sending the Oilers to the foul line 42 times.
Moret scored 5 points in the first minute or so as West LA jumped out to a 7-0 lead and led the rest of the way. The Oilers began the game with a 2-0 lead as a result of a pre-game techincal foul against Barstow for a uniform infraction (i.e. not having numbers on the fronts of their jerseys).
West LA quickly pushed the lead to double-digits at 11-1 but never really pulled away from the pesky Vikings. At halftime, West led by 6 at 50-44 and though the Oilers had a double-digit lead for much of the second half Barstow pulled to within 7 at 82-75 with just under 5 minutes left and still trailed by just 8 at 82-74 with exactly two minutes remaining.
But then West LA pulled away, as Barstow had no choice but to foul with so little time remaining. SG Chanderrick Tyson made a pair of free throws, PG Justin Archie made a pair of free throws, PF Josh Jordan made a single free throw and Moret made a pair of free throws to seal the win for the Oilers.
For West, Tyson had a strong game with 23 pts and 6 asts, scoring 17 of his points in the second half. Archie had 15 points and a team-high 7 asts. And Jordan just missed a double-double with 11 pts and 9 rebs.
For Barstow, four players scored in double figures, three of them coming off the bench. PF Isaac Burley had 14pts, SF Dreu Johnson had 13 and PF Raymond Mitchell had 13 plus 9 rebs and 3 asts as reserves. Starter SF Davon Miller also reached double digits with 12 pts, all on threes, before fouling out with 3:32 left. PG Tony Howard had a strong game for the Vikings with 8 pts and a team-high 7 asts.
