SD City 82, East LA 71

SG Marvin Sykes had 22 pts and Ctr Menas Stephens stuffed the stat sheet with 17 pts, 8 rebs, 6 asts, 4 blocks and 2 steals as SD City topped East LA, 82-71, in the Neil Edwards tourney Sunday afternoon at Citrus College.

East LA started the game well, jumping out to an 11-5 lead in the opening minutes. SD City rallied to tie the score at 12 and again at 17 before East LA got consecutive 3-pointers from SF Zack Ward and PG Albert Chavez to take a 23-17 lead. Another 3-pointer by Chavez pushed the margin to nine points at 29-19.

SD City (6-4) went on an 11-0 run, taking a 30-28 lead on a basket by Sykes after a steal by PF Stephon Lamar. The lead went back and forth for the rest of the half, which ended with East LA (4-4) holding a 37-36 lead after a putback by Sykes in the final seconds.

But when the second half started, SD City went on an 11-2 run to lead 47-39 and led the rest of the way. The Knights pushed the lead to double figures at 53-43 on a 3-pointer by SG Bren Haley, and two baskets by Ctr Kyle Anderson made it 57-43. The lead reached 18 points on a basket by Sykes that made it 64-48.

East LA cut the deficit to nine points at 68-59 with 7:09 left, and got within seven points at 72-65 after a putback basket by SF Elson Vessel with just under four minutes left. But a jumper by Lamar and a fast-break basket by Sykes made it 76-65, and a Sykes 3-pointer ended all doubt as to the outcome, making it 82-69 with just over a minute to go.

Stephens earned all-tournament honors for his strong overall performance. Lamar added 11 pts, 4 rebs and 3 asts, and Anderson came off the bench for 10 pts and a game-high 9 rebs, just missing the double-double. SD City went 2-1 in the tournament, tying for second place.

For East LA, Ctr Rafael Morelos led the way with 19 pts, and SF Deon Geary had 12 pts, 8 rebs and 4 asts. PG Terrell Robinson had 10 pts and Chavez had 8 pts and 4 asts.
