Santa Ana 92, Cerritos 81

Santa Ana used hot shooting in the first half and plentiful free throw opportunities in the second half to post a 92-81 win over Cerritos Tuesday night in the Dons' home opener.

Santa Ana (4-2) shot a sizzling 62.5% from the floor in the first half, making 7 three-pointers and running out to a 53-34 lead at the break. And though the Dons cooled in the second half, shooting just 25% from the field, they made 20 of 27 free throws after halftime to easily hold off a late rally from Cerritos.

Santa Ana led wire-to-wire, jumping out to an 11-2 lead early on with PF Terryn Large scoring 9 of those 11 points. Cerritos (0-4) closed the gap to two points at 15-13, but then Santa Ana gradually widened the margin the remainder of the half.

PG Kevin Ramirez and SF Chase Miller hit 3-pointers to push the Santa Ana lead to eight points at 23-15, and then Miller converted a traditional 3-point play with 8:24 left in the first half to make it 26-17. A Miller 3-point basket made it 29-17.

SF Isaiah Chennault scored on a lay-up after a steal to push the margin to 13 at 31-18. A lay-up by Ramirez made it 35-20. A 3-pointer by Miller pushed the lead to 16 points at 41-25. A 3-pointer by SG Raymond Barros made it 46-28 with 3:45 left in the half, and a 3-pointer by Ramirez pushed the Santa Ana lead to 21 points at 51-30 late just before halftime.

Cerritos cut the deficit to 14 points a couple of times early in the second half, but Santa Ana widened the gap to as many as 23 points after a pair of free throws by SG Cammie Lewis midway through the second half.

Cerritos continued to push the pace, and started chipping away at the deficit as time wound down. A basket by SF Andrew Torres made it 74-61 with 6:23 left. A 3-point play by SF Anthony Holliday after a steal made it an 11-point game at 81-70 with 2:42 left.

But Cerritos ran out of time and never really threatened to pull even. SG Kevin Conrad had the Falcon highlight of the night when he drove the lane and dunked over two defenders with 29.1 seconds left to bring Cerritos within 9 points at 88-79, but that was as close as the Falcons would get.

Miller led all scorers with 19 pts, including 4 threes, off the bench for Santa Ana. Large had a double-double with 15 pts and 10 rebs, and Lewis just missed a double-double with 14 pts and 9 asts. SG Martin Kim had 13 pts on 5-for-7 from the floor. Ramirez had 10 pts and dished out 6 asts. SF Erik Emanuel had 7 pts, 4 asts and 6 steals.

For Cerritos, Torres had a team-high 13 pts and added 5 rebs and 2 steals. Holliday had 11 pts, 4 asts and 3 steals, and PF DeAnthony Roberts also had 11 pts. Ctr Marquise Washington had a double-double with 10 pts and a game-high 11 rebs, and he also had 3 asts and 3 blocked shots.
