Ctr Ivan Johnson scored 25 pts and SF Eddie Dawson added 17 as #13 LA Southwest (5-1) topped #11 Ventura (3-3), 80-60, in the championship game of the Condor Classic at Oxnard. LASW went on a 21-2 run in the second quarter to take command of the game and held a double-digit lead for most of the second half.
Tourney MVP honors went to Dawson, but in the final it was Johnson who put on a show with several thunderous dunks and a strong overall performance with 7 rebs and 5 asts in addition to his scoring. But he had plenty of help, not only from Dawson but from PF Donnell Wright (10 pts, 11 rebs), PG Michael Woodard (10 pts, 6 asts) and backup guard Dante Maddox (13 pts, 4 threes).
The game was tied 12-12 after 6 minutes when Ventura went into a funk that lasted long enough for LA Southwest to build a 19-point lead. The Pirates ended up with 14 turnovers in the first half, after which they trailed 35-20. A pair of jumpers from SF Moses Gonzalez appeared to give Ventura some life early in the second half, but Johnson led another Cougar run that put Southwest back ahead by 18 and they cruised from there.
Gonzalez, who was named to the All-Tournament team along with Johnson and Wright from LASW, led Ventura with 19 pts. Ctr Gary Nunez added 18 pts and 7 rebs, and reserve PG David Van Someran had 10 pts, all in the second half.
