SF Germel Coleman had 35 pts and PG Gino Riney had 20 pts, 8 asts and 5 steals as host LA Valley (6-2) knocked off #11-ranked Ventura (5-3) 100-94 in a WSC crossover game Wednesday night in Valley Glen.
Coleman went 12 of 18 from the floor and added 6 rebs and 5 steals in the win. And Riney had a key shot, an 8-foot pull-up jumper with 28 seconds left, and a steal on Ventura's last possession to secure the win.
Valley led the entire second half, pushing its advantage to as many as 16 points early in the half when Ventura had its reserves in the game to begin the half.
Ventura closed the gap to 4 points at 98-94 after a basket by Ctr Angelo Whitehead on a feed from PG Robert Wright with under a minute remaining.
But Riney inserted the dagger on Valley's next possession with his jumper with 28 seconds left that made it 100-94. Then, when Ventura got the ball into the front court, Riney stole the ball to end any last chance Ventura might have had.
Early on, Valley showed it would give the favored Pirates all they could handle, jumping out to a 9-4 lead. But then Ventura recovered, and the lead went back and forth for much of the rest of the first half.
Late in the half, the game was tied at 34 when Valley got threes from SG Chris Horstman and Riney and a basket from Ctr Joey Street to take a 42-34 advantage. The Monarchs led, 50-40, at the break and led the entire second half. Ventura began the second half with a small lineup in the game and big men Ctr Brandon Dixon and PF Tavaris Gilbert on the bench, but were unable to cut into the Valley lead.
For Valley, in addition to Coleman and Riney (who actually had 22 pts but two FTs on a technical foul in the first half were never posted on the scoreboard), Horstman reached double figures with 13 pts including 3 threes. PF Shaun Johnson had a huge game with 13 pts, 10 rebs and 4 blocks coming off the bench. Street had just 4 pts but pulled down 10 rebs for the Monarchs. Valley shot 53% from the floor as a team for the night.
For Ventura, SF Kevin Menner led the way with 30 pts, 6 rebs, 3 asts, 2 blocks and 3 steals. Whitehead had 14 pts, 3 rebs and 3 blocks and SG Dee Pinkard had 13 pts and 5 asts. Dixon had 10 pts and 7 rebs, and PG Robert Wright had 7 pts and a team-high 7 asts.
