SG Kareem Grant came off the bench to pour in 29 pts on 12/15 shooting to lead #6 LA City (6-1) past Chaffey (2-3) in the marquee game of the second round at Citrus. Grant scored 7 pts and Ctr Tony Key had a dunk + FT for a 3-point play as LACC went on a 10-2 run to open a close game and go up 88-78 with 1:36 to play.
Key had a big game as well, scoring 14 pts on 6/6 shooting, and also totalling 7 rebs, 4 asts and 2 blocks. SG Anthony Davis had 14 pts and 7 rebs, plus a team-best 5 asts. LACC's depth was tested as starters PF Shawn Simpson and SF Wayne Arnold fouled out in the second half, but with Grant and Key entering the game as reserves, LACC hardly missed a beat.
The game was tied 40-40 at the break, despite LACC's shooting 72% in the first half. That, however, was offset by the Cubs' 22 turnovers as they struggled against the Chaffey press. Chaffey shot just 36% but had as many made baskets (13 - on twice as many attempts, 36) as LACC because of all the turnovers.
But in the second half, LA City settled down and limited the turnovers to just 8. And they continued their sharpshooting ways, hitting at a 60% clip after the break and 65% for the game.
Chaffey was led, as usual, by PG Sheldon Pace (22 pts, 6 asts, 3 steals). SF Tony McFadden added 14 pts, 5 rebs and 4 steals, with most of that coming in the first half. PF Erik Scott scored 14 of his 16 pts, including 3 threes, in the second half. Philip Scott added 13 pts (3 threes) for the Panthers. SF David Edwards had 12 pts, all in the first half.
