PF Alan Alston had 17 pts and 9 rebs, and PG Nick Giudice had 12 pts, 8 asts and 4 steals as Victor Valley (3-5) defeated Imperial Valley (2-4), 62-53, to capture the consolation championship of the Neil Edwards Classic tournament at Citrus College in Glendora.
Victor Valley pulled away late after Imperial Valley closed to within a point at 48-47 with under four minutes remaining. Imperial Valley still trailed by just a point at 50-49, but then Victor Valley went on an 11-2 spurt to take control of the game.
Early on, Imperial Valley took a 10-6 lead after 3-pointers by SG Vicente Valdez and SF Cliff Harrell. Victor Valley rallied and took a lead, pushing the margin to as many as 8 points at 23-15 after a 3-pointer by PG Randy Oronoz and a lay-up by SF Vincent Turner on a feed from Oronoz.
Imperial Valley scored the next 8 points to tie the score at 23, and the lead went back and forth the rest of the half until Victor Valley emerged with a 29-26 lead at the break after a basket by Alston in the final seconds of the half.
Victor Valley got a steal & basket from Giudice to make it 31-26 early in the second half, but Imperial Valley rallied to tie it once again, 33-33, after SF Isaac Waters hit a 3-pointer and then fed Ctr Josh Holmes for a basket.
Then Victor Valley went back into the lead, building a 46-37 advantage midway through the second half after a pair of threes by Giudice and a basket by SF Shaun Weeks on an assist Giudice. The Rams would hold that lead the rest of the way.
Imperial Valley rallied to within a point at 48-47 and 50-49, but then Victor Valley pulled away for good. A basket by Alston on a pass from Giudice made it 56-49 with 1:05 left. Two free throws each by Oronoz and Giuduce in the final 48 seconds sealed the win.
Harrell led Imperial Valley with 16 pts on 7-of-9 from the floor. Waters had 13 pts plus 5 rebs, 2 asts and 3 steals.
Alston was named to the All-Tournament team.
One other note is that the game might have set a state record in that there were no fouls called on either team for the first 18:11 of the second half. Moments before, the VVC coaches had requested that the foul totals be put on the board since it read 0-0, seemingly not displaying the foul totals...but it was indeed showing them!
