Allen Wilcher scored 26 pts and Latrell Wilson had 22 as host Cabrillo upset #2-ranked Lassen, 71-59, in the final game of the Cabrillo College Classic Sunday in Aptos.
Cabrillo (4-4) trailed, 29-21, when coach Tony Marcopoulos drew a technical foul for pointing out to the officials that his team had been called for 15 fouls in the first 18:36 despite playing mostly a 2-3 zone.
And that turned things around for the Seahawks, who then went on a 24-2 run over halftime to take a 45-31 lead and control of the game. Cabrillo led by at least nine points the rest of the way after that run.
Early on, Cabrillo jumped out to a 13-4 lead, only to see Lassen (10-2) go on a 10-0 run to take a 14-13 lead. The game remained close the rest of the half, with Lassen extending its lead beyond four points only on the four free throws for the technical foul and the original foul that drew Coach Marcopoulos' objection.
Cabrillo shot just 27% from the floor in the first half, but started the second half by hitting 8 of its first 11 shots during the run. Wilson scored 8 of the Seahawks' first 10 points of the second half, giving Cabrillo a 37-31 lead after a baseline jumper. Wilcher scored 10 points during the run, pushing the lead to 45-31 after a 3-pointer.
Lassen made one last push, cutting the deficit to nine points after a 3-point field goal and a 3-point play by Diondrey D.J. Holt. But Wilcher pushed the lead back to 14 with a three, and fed Zavon Jackson for a score to make it 52-36. Two free throws by Kean Flowers made it 54-36 with 9:18 to play, at which point Lassen had missed 15 of its 18 field goal attempts in the second half.
Wilcher led all scorers with his 26 pts, and also added 9 rebs and 6 asts in a Tyreke Evans-like performance. Wilson had 22 pts, 3 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals. Jackson had 12 pts, 9 rebs, 4 asts, 2 blks and 2 steals. Perhaps the oddest statistical line came from Cabrillo's two Centers, Matthieu Fuchs and Noah Wheeler, who combined to play 39 minutes; they both fouled out without attempting a field goal.
For Lassen, Holt managed 10 pts, including a pair of threes, despite foul trouble that sidelined him for most of the first half. Sam Allen III had 10 pts, 7 rebs, 3 asts and a steal, though most of that came in the first half. Marvin White had 9 pts and 4 asts, George Jackson Jr. had 8 pts and Juandrico Walker came off the bench for 7 pts and 7 rebs.
