SG Darryl Wong had 18 pts and 3 asts to lead a hot-shooting #12 Foothill squad to a 73-60 win over #10 Monterey Peninsula despite an outstanding performance by Ctr Andrew Young of the Lobos Monday night in the season opener for both teams.
Wong made 3 threes and 7 of 10 shots from the floor of the night, and Foothill shot 49% with 9 threes from six different players. Seven of those 3-pointers came in the first half, during which Foothill built an 11-point lead. MPC never got the lead below seven points in the second half.
MPC started out well, jumping out to an 11-3 lead in the game's first few minutes. But Foothill rallied to tie the score at 13, and took its first lead on a 3-pointer by Wong moments later that capped a 13-2 Owl run.
The lead went back and forth the next few minutes but Foothill started to pull away late in the half. A driving lay-up by Wong made it 29-21, and a basket by Ctr Brett McConnell pushed the lead to nine at 31-22. A driving lay-up by Wong in the final minute of the half made it 39-28 at the break.
Another McConnell basket pushed Foothill's lead to 13 in the opening seconds of the second half, and the Owls led by as many as 15 points at 48-33 after a basket by PF Dave Fullenwiley.
Monterey Peninsula battled back to cut the deficit to seven points at 55-48 after two free throws by SF Adam Myren with 8:41 left, and trailed by seven again after a 3-pointer by Myren with 3:43 to go, but never got any closer.
Foothill pulled away down the stretch, finishing the game with a 7-1 spurt in the last three minutes. Another basket by McConnell made it 68-59, and a 3-point play by Wong made it 71-59 with 2:21 left. A lay-up by Wong with just under a minute to go made it 73-60 and closed out the scoring.
Wong had his team-high 18 pts and 3 asts, and McConnell had 10 pts and a team-high 6 rebs before fouling out late in the game. SG Suhail Mohammadi came off the bench for 13 pts and 5 asts. Overall, Foothill shot 49% from the floor with 9 3-pointers and just 8 turnovers.
For Monterey Peninsula, Young led the way with game-highs of 35 pts and 14 rebs, more than twice as many rebounds as any other player in the game.
