Broderic Smith scored the final 4 points of the game in the final 42 seconds as College of the Canyons edged Victor Valley, 61-58, at the SoCal Fall JUCO Jamboree.
Canyons held an 11-point lead the half, but had to survive not only a barrage of 3-pointers by Victor Valley but the loss of standout point guard Coley Apsay, who left the game with a few minutes left after apparently taking a shot to the ribs on a hard collision as he drove to the basket.
And Victor Valley took a 58-57 lead on a short jumper by Kimani Lane with 1:34 left. Without Apsay things looked a little bleak for the Cougars from Santa Clarita.
But Smith scored on a driving lay-up with 42 seconds left to give Canyons a 59-58 lead. Then after a missed shot by Victor Valley, Smith was fouled and made a 2-point free throw with 23.9 seconds left to make it 61-58. Deshawn Hayes' would-be game-tying 3-pointer for Victor Valley missed as the final horn sounded.
Apsay finished with a team-high 11 pts for the winners plus 3 rebs, 4 asts and a steal before leaving with the abdominal injury. Smith had 8 pts, 4 rebs and 2 asts, and Brandon Otero also had 8 pts and 4 rebs. Ricardo Greaves had 7 pts and 6 rebs.
For Victor Valley, Lane scored a game-high 18 pts on 8-for-13 from the floor, including a pair of threes. Hayes had 15 pts including 3 threes. Stephen Evans had 7 pts, 5 asts and 3 steals. Overall VVC made 10 3-pointers in the game.
