With Chaffey looking to finish the summer with a perfect 8-0 record, Saddleback jumped out to a 16-point first-half lead and held on for the narrowest of victories to spoil the CHP's perfect record at the SoCal Fall JUCO Jamboree Sunday afternoon.
Saddleback made 5 of its first 6 shots of the game, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Andrew Bournes, to jump out to an early 16-2 lead. The Gaucho advantage reached as many as 16 points after a 3-point play by Connor Clifford with 1:31 left in the first half made it 26-10.
Saddleback still held a 12-point lead at the half, but Chaffey cut the deficit to just four points by starting the second half with a 10-2 run. A 3-pointer by Devyn Sampson brought Chaffey within three points at 36-33 and a driving lay-up by Carl Robinson made it 36-35 with 4:45 still on the clock.
But Saddleback managed to maintain its lead the rest of the game. Chaffey got within a point one last time after a 3-pointer by L.J. Harris with 1:25 left, but missed a pair of would-be winning shots in the final seconds.
Jalen Hall led all scorers with 12 pts for Saddleback, and he also had 2 rebs, 2 asts and 2 steals. Clifford had 11 pts and game-highs of 8 rebs and 2 blocks. Maurice Jones had 10 pts, 5 rebs and 2 asts.
For Chaffey, Harris and Victor Joseph each scored 8 pts, while Sampson and Brandon Shaw each scored 6. Tim Myles had 4 pts and team-highs of 7 rebs and 2 steals.
