Shane Shelton scored the game-winning basket in sudden-death overtime off a pass from Kaelen Mitchell to lift Grossmont past Ventura, 51-49, at the SoCal Fall JUCO Jamboree at Cerritos College.
That basket was Shelton's only score of the game, but it resulted in Grossmont getting the win in what was a bit of an upset given that Grossmont was without two of its best players, including scoring star Izzy Wagner.
Grossmont held a narrow 22-19 lead the half, but built a 30-21 advantage after a 3-pointer by Martin Panayotov early in the second half.
But Ventura got within a point at 37-36 midway through the half, and tied it at 41 on a putback basket by Jamal Lewis. Ventura took a 47-45 lead with 2:20 left, but Grossmont tied it moments later and the game ended up going to overtime, setting the stage for Shelton's final score.
For Grossmont, Aaron Burns scored a team-high 10 pts on 4-for-4 from the floor. Mitchell had 9 pts and a very important assist, while Panayotov and Trent Rowser each scored 8 pts. Robert Romero had 6 pts, 6 rebs, 2 asts and 3 blocked shots.
For Ventura, Vondel Faniel had a monster game with 21 pts and 13 rebs, with both totals being more than twice as many as any other player in the game. But he ws the only Pirate to score in double digits. Steven Bush and Toure Atwater each scored 7 pts. Elijah Brown had 4 pts and a game-high 5 asts.
