Shelton Boykin scored 18 pts and Julius Bilbrew came off the bench to score 10 as Antelope Valley outlasted San Bernardino Valley 62-55 in a battle of two of the top teams at the SoCal Fall JUCO Jamboree.
Billed as a marquee match-up for the heavyweight championship of the shootout, the game didn't disappoint as two very talented, very physical teams battled on largely even terms for 30 minutes. AVC went on an 11-0 run in the first half to take a 26-18 advantage and led the rest of the way. But it was still a 4-point game with just over a minute to go when SBVC was forced to foul to try to rally, only to watch AVC make four 2-point free throws in the final minute to clinch the victory.
AVC started the game with an 6-0 spurt and led, 13-6. But SBVC battled back to take a 16-15 lead with just over six minutes left in the first half, and a putback slam by Trayvon Bashir moments later made it 18-15.
However, then AVC went on the 11-0 run, taking a lead on a slam dunk by Josh Wade and then getting a 3-point field goal from Adrian Francis and a traditional 3-point play from Boykin to lead, 26-18.
SBVC closed the gap to three points to trail, 29-26, at the break, and pulled within a point with just over 6 minutes left in the second half after a basket by Steven Adams made it 44-43.
But AVC never surrendered the lead. SBVC was still only 4 points down after a basket by Kyle Benton with just over a minute left. But Ismail Ali, Lawrence White, Boykin and Francis all made 2-point free throws down the stretch to clinch the win for AVC.
Boykin led all scorers with his 18 pts, whicn came on 6-for-8 from the floor, and he also had 7 rebs. He was named Most Outstanding Player of the July shootout when he played for LA Trade Tech, and was a huge reason AVC went 4-0 in this event after going 0-4 in the July shootout.
Bilbrew scored 10 pts off the bench, while Ali and Francis scored 7 pts each. Francis also dished out a team-high 5 asts.
Bashir led SBVC with 15 pts on 6-for-6 from the floor, and he also had 4 rebs, 2 asts, 2 steals and a blocked shot. Adams came off the bench for 13 pts and 7 rebs. Benton and Khleem Perkins each scored 10 pts; Benton was 5-for-6 from the floor while Perkins also had 3 rebs, 2 asts and 4 steals. Charles Callison had an off-day shooting, making just 1 of 11 shots from the floor, but managed 7 pts and a game-high 9 asts.
