Here is a game-by-game summary of the 11 games I watched on Saturday, July 20th at Azusa Pacific as part of the 2013 San Gabriel Valley JUCO Shootout.
Links to the box scores are at the bottom of the page.
Chaffey 58, Fresno 37:
Jeff Nibo scored 14 pts and Todd Lewis scored 10 as Chaffey posted a surprisingly one-sided win over perennial NorCal power Fresno City en route to a perfect 4-0 record for the weekend.
Chaffey, a state finalist in 2012, and Fresno, the state champion in 2011, appeared to be the premier match-up of the 2013 San Gabriel Valley JUCO Shootout. That both teams play a similar style made the showdown all that much more compelling.
But Chaffey took command shortly after halftime, taking a 14-point lead midway through the second half and crusing to a most impressive 21-point victory. For the game, Chaffey forced an astounding total of 28 Fresno turnovers.
The first half was slow for both teams, with Chaffey taking a 15-7 lead until Fresno got a 3-pointer from Kahleal Ferguson just before the halftime buzzer to make it 15-10 at the break.
But Chaffey started the second half quickly, scoring the first seven points to lead 22-10 after a 3-pointer by Andrew Harper just 1:05 into the half. Fresno never rallied from that double-digit deficit. An emphatic slam dunk by Nibo made it 40-24 midway through the half and put an exclamation point on Chaffey's win.
Nibo made 7 of 10 shots for his game-high 14 pts and added 6 rebs, 2 asts and 2 steals. Lewis had 10 pts, 4 rebs and 3 steals. Pape Automane Seck came off the bench for 6 pts and a game-high 7 rebs.
For Fresno, Brian Chambers had 8 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals. Dejon Burdeaux also had 8 pts. Mike Crawley had 6 pts and a team-best 6 rebs.
Bakersfield 50, West Hills 46:
Van Holloway scored 16 pts and Gary Lux scored 12 for Bakersfield in a 50-46 win over West Hills in a rare showdown between Central Valley neighbors that are inexplicably not only in different conferences but in different regions.
West Hills started the game well, jumping out to a 13-2 lead in the opening minutes and taking a 19-7 lead midway through the first half. But Bakersfield rallied to tie the score at 24 on a 3-point play by Holloway with 41.5 seconds left in the first half, and that's where things stood at the break.
West Hills went back in front, 32-27, after 3-pointers by Vincent Lidgett and Anthony Zataray. But Bakersfield tied the score at 34 on a 3-pointer by Holloway with 8:45 to go.
Bakersfield took a 5-point lead on a 3-pointer by Chris Wright with 2:15 left that made it 48-43. West Hills got a 3-pointer from Josh Ault, but that would be the extent of its rally. A 2-pt free throw by Lux with 5.2 seconds left clinched the win for Bakersfield.
Holloway finished with 16 pts, 2 rebs, 2 asts and a steal. Lux had 12 pts, 4 rebs, 2 asts, a block and a steal. Wright had 9 pts, 4 rebs and 3 asts.
For West Hills, Isaiah Bryson had 9 pts, 5 rebs and 2 asts. Vincent Lidgett had 8 pts, 5 rebs and 5 asts. Troy Arce, a 6-foot guard and son of head coach Mark Arce, came off the bench for 7 pts and a game-high 6 rebs.
San Jose 82, Canyons 67:
San Jose lived up to its moniker as "Speed City", with four players scoring at least 16 points and the Runnin' Jaguars racing to a most entertaining 82-67 win over College of the Canyons in one of the highest-scoring games of the weekend.
Offense was the theme of the game, with the teams combining for 113 shots and 149 points in the 30-minute game. A comparable game in the regular season might have ended with a score of 109-89.
Canyons jumped out to an early 16-9 lead, but San Jose answered with a 10-0 run to lead, 19-16. Canyons then responded with an 8-0 spurt to lead, 24-19, after a 3-pointer by Ilya Ilyayev late in the first half. San Jose tied it at 29 on a free throw by Andre Russell just before halftime.
In the second half, Speed City raced right past the Cougars, scoring an amazing total of 53 points in just 15 minutes, making 20 of 29 shots (69%) and leading virtually the entire half.
A fast-break basket by Bobby Grey made it 47-37 about four minutes into the second half, and San Jose led the rest of the way. A 3-point play by Maurice Joiner with 4:58 left made it 66-51.
Joiner led all scorers with 19 pts for San Jose, and he added 8 rebs. Grey had 18 pts, a game-high 7 asts and a team-high 5 steals. Russell had a double-double with 16 pts and 11 rebs, and added 4 asts and 3 steals. Josue Salaam also scored 16 pts for the Jaguars.
For Canyons, Roman Delgado had a team-high 16 pts on 6-for-9 from the floor. David Horst had 15 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts and 5 steals. Zach Davis had 14 pts and a team-high 7 rebs.
El Camino 44, Sequoias 31:
Eric Joseph Moeller scored 14 pts and added 4 rebs and 3 blocked shots to lead El Camino to a surprisingly easy win over a visibly tired College of the Sequoias team.
El Camino used three different units of 5 players, and that seemed to wear down COS, playing its fourth game of the event. El Camino limited the Giants to 25% shooting for the game and posted a plus-11 rebounding advantage.
El Camino took control of the game from the start, jumping out to a 12-2 lead and leading, 29-13, after a 3-point play by Moeller with 1:54 left in the first half. It was 31-18 at the break, and El Camino scored the first six points of the second half to push the lead to 19 points at 37-18, and COS never mounted a rally.
Moeller was the only player for El Camino to score in double digits, hardly a surprise as the Warriors not only used 15 players but shot only 30% from the floor. Seifert Emmanuel Scott had 6 pts on 3-for-4 from the floor and grabbed 4 rebs.
For Sequoias, Brantley Bynum scored 11 pts on 5-for-7 from the floor. Chris Ross had 6 pts and added 2 rebs and 2 asts. But their teammates combined to make just 3 of 27 shots from the floor. Chris Smith corralled a game-high 6 rebs.
Merritt 61, San Diego City 37:
Maceo Bell Jr. and Darien Williams each scored 14 pts and Sammy Allen Jr. scored 11 as Merritt broke open a close game in the second half and broke away for a 24-point win over SD City.
Merritt used an 8-0 run to take a lead in the first half, and led by as many as 11 points at 22-11 after a steal & lay-up by Bell late in the half. But SD City rallied to trail by just six points at 22-17 at the break.
Merritt continued to lead in the second half, but SD City got within three points after a 3-point play by Chris Burton off a pass from Mike Scott that made it 28-25. SD City trailed by 3 at 30-27 a couple of minutes later.
After that, however, Merritt gradually pulled away, widening its lead as the second half continued. Williams hit a pull-up jumped to make it 38-29. Allen hit a long 2-point jumper to make it 46-35 with about 3 minutes left, and moments later made a 3-pointer. Andrew Gilmore scored on a putback of his own miss to make it 51-35 and Allen made a 2-pt free throw with 1:34 left to make it 53-35, precluding any thoughts of an SD City comeback.
Bell made all 5 of his shots from the floor and Williams was 6-for-7 for a Merritt team that shot 56% from the field for the game. Gilmore had 8 pts and 5 rebs, and Marcus Green had 4 pts and a game-high 12 rebs. Point guard Jalil Eppenger had just 2 pts, mainly because he only took one shot (which he made), but dished out a game-high 5 asts and grabbed 4 steals.
For SD City, Nate Edwards scored a team-best 10 pts and also had 4 rebs. No other Knights had more than 5 points. Ivan Kulkin had 4 pts and a team-high 7 rebs.
LA Pierce 58, Reedley 41:
Terrell Funches scored 13 pts and three of his teammates scored 8 points each as LA Pierce outdistanced Reedley, 58-41.
It was a game of runs as Pierce began the game jumping out to a startling 17-0 lead. At that point Pierce coach Ed Babayan substituted freely, resting his starters, but that allowed Reedley to get back in the game.
Reedley rallied to cut the deficit to 13 at halftime at 31-18, and continued to rally in the second half. And the Tigers got a break when Pierce standout Victor Evans was ejected from the game for responding angrily when a Reedley player landed on him during a scramble for a loose ball. The resulting automatic 2 points made it 31-22. A baseline jumper by Andre Frazier made it 31-24, and a 3-pointer by Pat Monreal brought Reedley within five points at 35-30 with about 10 minutes remaining.
But then Pierce pulled away again. A 3-point play by Arsenio Jimenez after a rebound pushed the Brahma lead back to double digits at 50-38 with 4:20 left. Charles Honest made one 2-pt free throw with 3:44 left and another with 3:16 left to make it 54-38 and clinch the win for Pierce.
Funches led all scorers with his 13 pts. Honest had 8 pts and a game-high 9 rebs. J.R. Williams had 8 pts and 4 asts, and Evans managed 8 points before his premature exit.
For Reedley, Monreal came off the bench for 9 pts and Matt Pigg scored 7. Nathan Gavlan had 6 pts and a team-high 7 rebs.
Grossmont 68, Alameda 47:
Artavian Pray had a double-double with 11 pts and 11 rebs and Grossmont shot nearly 57% from the floor, racing past Alameda, 68-47.
Grossmont started the game with an 8-0 run and led every step of the way. A 3-pointer by Tyson Kygar pushed the lead to 13 points at 22-9 midway through the first half, and the lead reached 14 points at 34-20 after a slam dunk by Tim Patrick late in the first half.
Alameda finished the first half with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to six points at 34-28, but Grossmont started the second half with a 20-6 extended run to take complete control of the game. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Andres Jimenez and Thomas Butler made it 42-28 early in the second half, and Grossmont led by double digits the rest of the way.
Pray went 5-for-5 from the floor for his team-high 11 pts and his 11 rebs were game-high. Mark Ogden had 9 pts and 10 rebs to just miss a double-double of his own. Yuel Hagos also scored 9 pts and Kygar had 8. Martin Meza scored just 2 pts - mainly because he attempted and made just one shot - but dished out a game-high 5 asts.
For Alameda, Dave Drew came off the bench for a game-high 12 pts. Cruz Ginns had 11 pts and 4 asts, and Marcus Booker had 10 pts and a team-high 6 rebs.
Mira Costa 47, Santa Ana 44:
7-foot-1 Geoff Frid had 13 pts, 11 rebs and 3 blocked shots as Mira Costa held off a late rally from Santa Ana to come away with a 3-point win.
Frid, a freshman from Impact Academy, teamed with 6-10 sophomore Fareed Ahmed to form a formidible twin towers for Mira Costa in what is certainly going to be the largest front line in the PCC this season.
After Santa Ana jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, Mira Costa went on a 14-0 run to take an 18-8 lead after a bank shot by Sawyer Carlson late in the first half. A 3-point play by Frid with 39.3 seconds left in the first half made it 23-12 at the break.
Santa Ana rallied to take a 33-32 lead with 5:40 left after back-to-back 3-pointers by Chad Young and Corey Wilson. But Mira Costa went back in front moments later on a 3-pointer by Thaddeus Gray, and led, 39-33, after a 2-pt free throw by Frid.
Santa Ana rallied again, howwever, getting within a point at 43-42 after a putback basket by Cammeron Hill with 38.9 seconds left. After Carlson made a 2-pt free throw for Mira Costa to make it 45-42, Santa Ana's Dujuan Williams scored on a lay-up with 6.9 seconds left to again make it a 1-point game at 45-44.
However, Williams exclaimed a bit too loudly after his basket, and he was whistled for a technical foul. That gave Mira Costa an automatic two points to make it 47-44 and the ball back. Chuck Smith was fouled with 5.8 seconds left and had the chance to clinch the win with a free throw. He missed, but Santa Ana was out of timeouts and was unable to get away a final would-be game-tying shot.
Frid posted game-highs with his 13 pts, 11 rebs and 3 blocks, but all 8 Mira Costa players scored at least two points. Gray had 9 pts and Smith finished with 6 pts and 3 asts.
For Santa Ana, Young managed a team-high 10 pts though he made just 3 of 15 field goal attempts. Hill just missed a double-double with 8 pts and a team-high 9 rebs. Overall, however, Santa Ana shot just 28% from the floor and 29% from the free throw line.
LA Harbor 51, Orange Coast 48 (OT):
Kenneth Green's 3-pointer from the left corner in sudden-death overtime lifted LA Harbor to a dramatic win over Orange Coast.
Orange Coast had forced overtime when Spencer Poston hit a 3-pointer with one minute to go. That followed 2-pt free throws by Jamar Cannon and Anthony Foster that gave LA Harbor a 48-45 lead late in the game.
Harbor started the game with a 13-2 run, but that would turn out to be the largest lead of the game for either team. Orange Coast cut the deficit to two points at 15-13 midway through the first half.
Orange Coast took a 23-22 lead with 2:38 left in the first half, and led, 30-28, at the break. Orange Coast led by as many as seven points at 35-28 early in the second half but neither team led by more than four points after Harbor tied the score at 37 with about 9 minutes left.
Dharion Tanner led Harbor with 13 pts, and Foster had 10 pts and a game-high 7 rebs. Kenneth Green scored 9 pts and Andre Foster had 8 pts and 5 rebs. Brandon Boyd had just 3 pts - mainly because he took (and made) just one shot - but dished out a game-high 7 asts.
For Orange Coast, Jonah Ganz scored 13 pts and made 3 three-pointers. Poston had 8 pts and a team-high 4 asts. Devaun Evans had 8 pts and 6 rebs.
Mt. San Jacinto 40, Saddleback 27:
Levon Harper and Mark Ware each scored 10 pts as Mt. San Jacinto avoided finishing winless with a 13-point win over previously-unbeaten Saddleback.
Mt. San Jacinto jumped out to a 14-6 lead midway through the first half, led by 7 at 20-13 at the break, and pushed the margin to double digits by starting the second half with an 8-0 run to make it 28-13.
Saddleback cut the deficit back to single digits with a 6-0 spurt, spurred by the entrance of Rashad Davis. But then Davis went back to the bench, and Mt. San Jacinto answered with an 8-2 spurt to push the lead back to 15 points with 8:40 left and led easily the rest of the way.
Harper tied for game honors with his 10 pts and added 5 rebs and 2 blocked shots. Ware had 10 pts, 3 rebs and 2 asts. Dejuan Smith had 6 pts and a game-high 9 rebs.
For Saddleback, Daniel Young and Andre Nikita each had 6 pts and 3 rebs. But the Gauchos rested several key players, with Davis tallying 4 pts, 3 rebs and a blocked shot in just a few minutes, Andre McPhail and Dalante Dunklin barely seeing the floor and Eric Thompson sitting the game out entirely.
LA Trade Tech 51, Cerritos 49 (OT):
Everett Osborne scored 10 pts, including the game-winning jumper from the left corner in sudden-death overtime, to lead LA Trade Tech to a 51-49 win over Cerritos in the final game of the 2013 SGV JUCO Shootout.
In a game that was closely-contested throughout, Osborne's jumper gave Trade Tech its first lead since early in the second half. Trade Tech held a narrow 29-28 lead at the break.
Cerritos took a 41-35 lead after Jordan Reise made his 4th 3-pointer of the game midway through the second half. That was the first lead of more than 5 points for either team in the game. Ikye Akajiobi scored off a pass from Terence Traylor to give Cerritos a 45-37 lead with about six minutes to go.
Trade Tech rallied to tie the score on a jumper by Osborne with 1:50 left that made it 47-47. Michael Crosby made a 2-pt free throw to put Cerritos back in front with 1:22 left, but Jordan Watson tied it again for Trade Tech with a left-handed hook shot with 1:07 remaining. Neither team scored again until Osborne's game-winner in OT.
Osborne led Trade Tech with his 10 pts and also had 3 steals. Kyle Reid had 8 pts and a game-high 9 rebs. Darnell Christopher had 4 pts and dished out a team-best 4 asts.
For Cerritos, Reise led all scorers with 14 pts, including the 4 three-pointers. Akajiobi had 9 pts and 6 rebs, and Traylor had 2 pts, 3 asts and a team-high 7 rebs.
