All rankings are based on the players and teams I saw play at the 2008 3 Stripes JC Shootout. There were 36 teams involved. I managed to see 24 of them in a total of 13 games (there were usually 3 games going on at a time, and obviously I could only watch one of them), including two teams twice.
Since there were usually 3 games going on at the same time, I had to make some tough choices and I hope you'll understand if I didn't get to see your team.
And of course, all these opinions are my own and have some degree of subjectivity. I've roughly followed the stats and results, but there is some subjective judgment involved as well. I recognize there's plenty of room for disagreement, but this is what I think...
Most Outstanding Player:
Terrance Pellum, Ctr, Foothill. The 6-6 sophomore managed the gaudy totals of 22 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and a steal in Foothill's 66-64 overtime win over Chaffey. Foothill rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit. And Pellum scored the winning points with a free throw in OT.
Most Outstanding Team:
The swarming pestilence that is the Fullerton Hornet defense made a lasting impression, forcing 25 turnovers and posting a 10-point win over what is perhaps the best team in Northern California (Yuba). This is a different Fullerton team from last year, when four stars carried the bulk of the load; this squad goes at least 12 deep. Center Mike Cox returns from last year. Former Westchester guard and Weber State bounceback Ahmaad Cook, Marshalltown transfer Josh Guillory and recent Etiwanda HS standout Tre Brewer lead the reinforcements. They will be tough this year.
