Long Beach JUCO Jamboree (6/26)

The 4th Annual California JUCO Showcase took place July 16 & 17 at Azusa Pacific University. Many of the top schools in California, as well as national JC powerhouse College of Southern Idaho, were represented at the event.

Over the two days, I covered 16 games at the event, which featured 25 of the 32 attending teams. (In addition, 3 of the other teams – Antelope Valley, Mt. San Jacinto and Rio Hondo - were covered at the Long Beach Jamboree three weeks ago; click on the link at the bottom to see coverage of that event).

Here's a game-by-game listing.

Friday:

1 pm: The Buzz (Fullerton) 47, Sehorn's (Yuba) 46

A free throw by SF Nick Buckley proved to be the winning points for The Buzz, capping a late comeback for a dramatic victory. Trailing by 8 with about 5 minutes to play, The Buzz rallied to take the lead at 42-40 on a leaner by SG Chris Williams. Sehorn's regained the lead on a free throw by Ctr Zach Andrews and a putback basket by SF Adam Snyder. The see-sawing continued when The Buzz' SF Bryce Sheldon nailed a 3-point free throw to put his team back in the lead. But Sehorn's regained the edge on a free throw by PF Kris Thornton with 20 seconds to play, setting the stage for Buckley's clutch shot.

Sheldon led all scorers with 15 points, including a pair of threes. Ctr Michael Earl had a huge game with 14 pts, 5 rebs and 3 blocks. Williams added 10 pts. Sehorn's was led by Thornton, who had 14 pts and 7 boards. Snyder had 9 pts and SG Jon Sheets added 8.

2 pm: V-Town (Ventura) 73, The Pier (Santa Monica) 60

Gary Nunez continued his summer of domination, following up a 17-point, 14-rebound performance at the Long Beach Jamboree in June with a 23-point, 9-rebound, 7-block effort. Nunez got help from SF Moses Gonzalez, who had 18 pts, 5 rebs and 4 asts. PF Djadji Daffe had a game-high 11 boards and also dished out 5 asts. SG Kevin Sims came off the bench to make 5 of 6 shots from the floor for 11 pts. PG Hylas Smith had 10 pts in a reserve role.

The Pier got a huge effort from SF LeBoise Gladden, who had 20 pts, 7 rebs, 3 asts, 2 blocks and 2 steals. PG Efrem Lawrence had a strong game with 12 pts and 5 asts. SG Justin Goins added 8 pts and 7 rebs.

3 pm: Grapevine (Bakersfield) 49, Say No (West LA) 45

SG Tyler Monk nailed 5 threes en route to a 21-point game to lead Grapevine to the win. Ctr Mario Malave posted a double-double, which is rare in this short-game format, with 14 pts and 11 rebs. Ctr Dado Kabov led Say No with 11 pts, including 3 threes, and 7 boards. But Say No shot just 30% from the floor for the game.

4 pm: Cobblestone (Southern Idaho) 55, The Buzz (Fullerton) 49

The national JC power CSI representative had all they could handle from a stubborn Buzz squad, but sank 9 threes to pull out the victory. PG Shawn Davis came off the bench to lead Cobblestone with 13 pts, while SG Zarryon Fereti and SF Travis Gabbidon each scored 12. Ctr Mohammed Kone controlled the boards with 11 rebs. The Buzz was led by SF Bryce Sheldon, who scored 15 pts. PG Tim Denson came off the bench to add 11 pts and 2 asts.

6 pm: Saratoga (West Valley) 33, The Cats (Canyons) 32

Saratoga jumped out to a 15-point lead midway through the second half and then barely withstood a furious Cat rally to post the 1-point victory. After trailing 18-8 at the half and 29-14 later in the game, The Cats nearly caught Saratoga though PG Curtis Dunwoody's three at the buzzer made the final score look even closer than the game really was.

Saratoga featured a balanced attack; SG Lamarr Hunt nailed a pair of threes for a team-leading 6 pts while five teammates scored 4 pts each. PF Ivan Elliott came off the bench to grab a team-high 5 rebs. PGs Drew Sanchez (3 pts, 3 asts, 4 steals) and Michael Steed (4 pts, 3 asts, 2 steals) both had strong games.

The Cats were led by SG Carlton Spencer, who had 9 pts. Ctr Andrew Morris had a strong all-around game with 6 pts, 5 rebs and 3 asts. SF Cedric Davis also grabbed 5 rebs. SG Navid Khajavi came off the bench to nail a pair of threes for 6 pts.

7 pm: Speed City (San Jose) 53, Orange Crush (Orange Coast) 46

SG Tristan King made 7 of 8 shots from the floor, including a pair of threes, to lead Speed City to the win. King finished with 16 pts, easily game-high. SF Jay Lee came off the bench and made 5 of 6 shots and had 11 pts. For the game, Speed City shot 55.6% from the field, easily the best figure of the weekend's games covered.

PF Reggie Brown scored 12 pts to lead Orange Crush, while SF Matt Davis came off the bench to make 5 of 6 shots for 10 pts and also grab 5 rebs.

8 pm: The Beach (Long Beach) 50, Alary Corp. (American River) 47

Ctr Chris Fields scored 12 pts and SG Kejaun Johnson added 11 plus 6 rebs as The Beach claimed a victory in the first day's finale. Johnson also dished out 3 asts for the winners. But game-high in assists went to backup PG Damien Massey, who had 4. Alary Corp. was led by Ctr Wolfgang Raferty, who had 11 pts and 6 rebs. PF Williams Pitts had 6 pts and a game-high 8 boards.

Saturday:

10 am: Speed City (San Jose) 46, South County (Saddleback) 45

PF Reggie Smith's 12-foot jumper with 3 seconds left gave Speed City a surprise win over South County, which had taken a 1-point lead moments earlier on a putback basket by SF Justin Allen. This game was close all the way, with Speed City holding a 26-23 lead at halftime before the lead see-sawed throughout the second half.

SG Tristan King had a strong all-around game with a game-high 11 pts plus 3 rebs, 2 asts, 2 blocks and 3 steals. Ctr Jamal Harris had 10 pts and SF Julian Conyers added 9 plus 4 rebs. As a team, Speed City shot 51.4% from the field (and 53.5% including the Friday game vs. Orange Crush).

For South County, Ctr Dominique Ricks led the way with 10 pts, 7 rebs and 3 asts. PG D.J. Smedley had 8 pts and SF Brandon McLaughlin came off the bench to add 7 pts.

11 am: Sehorn's (Yuba) 51, Cobblestone (Southern Idaho) 46

In the marquee matchup of the day, Sehorn's jumped out to a 16-point lead early in the second half, saw Cobblestone rally to within a point in the final seconds, but ultimately hold on to become the only California team to beat the out-of-state powerhouse.

Sehorn's led by 5 at 24-19 at the half, but pushed the lead to 37-21 with under 8 minutes to play. Then came the Cobblestone comeback, led by PG Shaun Davis, whose defensive pressure disrupted the Sehorn's ability to get the ball across the halfcourt line. He had 5 steals, 3 asts and 11 pts during the comeback and finished with 17 pts and 6 asts overall.

A layup by Davis closed the gap to 3 at 41-38 with 59 seconds left. Following a FT by Sehorn's Brian Videau made it 43-38, Davis nailed a three to close the gap to 2. Again, Cobblestone was forced to foul, and again Videau nailed the resulting FT, making it 45-41. This time the ball went to Ctr Ali Traore, who sank a hook shot to make it 45-43 with 23 seconds left. Once again Videau was fouled, but this time he missed the free throw. In came Ctr Zach Andrews for the putback, making it 47-43.

But Davis wasn't finished yet, driving to the basket, making the layup and drawing a foul on the play. When he made the ensuing FT, the score was 47-46 with 15 seconds left. Again, Cobblestone was forced to foul, and they sent Sehorn's SF Adam Snyder to the line. Snyder made the shot, making it 49-46, but that left a 3-point margin that Cobblestone could erase with a single shot.

Davis had one last chance to tie, but his attempted three was heavily contested. The shot hit the outside of the rim, and though he tried to lean in and draw the foul (a la Reggie Miller), no whistle sounded until Sehorn's Zach Andrews had the rebound safely tucked away. Andrews sank the ensuing FT for the final 51-46 margin.

Snyder led Sehorn's with 12 pts, but it was a balanced offensive attack for the winners. Andrews had 11, posting the double-double with his 13 rebs, and Thornton also had 11 pts. Videau added 9 pts and 10 boards.

In addition to Davis, the other double-figure scorer for Cobblestone was the 6-10 Traore, who had 10 pts. 6-11 Mohammed Kone had 4 pts and 6 rebs. Backup Ctr Tim Gould came off the bench and added 6 pts and 3 rebs.

12 noon: Team 605 (Cerritos) 45, Rocklin (Sierra) 43

SG Aaron King's steal and dunk with 38 seconds left proved to be the winning score in Team 605's unexpectedly difficult win over Rocklin.

Ctr Stanley Gill had a huge game with 17 pts, 6 rebs and 2 blocks, making 6 of 9 field goal attempts, and dominated the inside along with PF Marcus Outland, who had 9 pts, 6 rebs and 3 blocks for Team 605.

Yet Rocklin nearly pulled the upset, opening a 37-28 lead midway through the second half after Team 605 had begun the game on a 12-3 run. SG Mike Philogene scored 8 of his 12 pts in the second half to push his team into the lead. Ctr Phil Brown also had 12 pts for Rocklin. SG Justin Willis had a strong game with 9 pts, 4 asts and 2 steals. PG Jeff Flores had a game-high 8 asts though he did not score.

1 pm: Fremont (Ohlone) 50, The Cats (Canyons) 33

Fremont outscored The Cats 30-8 in the second half to overcome a 5-point deficit and post a resounding 17-point win. Fremont used a 5 x 5 substitution pattern, and their second unit featuring PG John Bernardo and SG Ryan Cooper proved too strong for The Cats. Cooper knocked down 4 threes en route to 16 pts, while Bernardo made 4 of 6 field goal attempts and dished out 5 asts.

The Cats had built a 25-20 lead in the first half, largely due to the efforts of SF Carlton Spencer. Last year's WSC-South MVP scored 11 of his 13 pts and dished out 3 asts before halftime. However, he was held to 2 pts and no assists in the second half, and the Cats drowned in a sea of turnovers (27 for the game). Ctr Lance Broadus finished with 5 pts and 8 rebs, including 3 pts after halftime, but he, Spencer and SG Jess Guidroz (a 3-point FG in brief action) were the only Cats to score in the second half.

2 pm: Orange Crush (Orange Coast) 44, Cagers (Santa Barbara) 38

SG Alfonso James scored 14 pts and PF Reggie Brown added 13 to lead Orange Crush to the win. Orange Crush jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the start and a 28-12 lead at halftime, and they managed to hold off a late comeback bid by the Cagers to hold on.

The Cagers began the game in hideous fashion, falling behind and showing few signs of life in the early going. At one point, the Cagers were 1 for 9 from the floor with 10 turnovers. In the first half, they made just 3 of 12 shots and also had 12 turnovers.

But in the second half, they drew to within 4 at 34-30 before the rally ran out of steam. PF Trent Watts had a big role in the comeback with 10 pts on 4 of 4 shooting, and SF Pat Minehan had 4 pts and 5 rebs.

However, the star of this game was Cager Ctr Rouslin Agogo. He dominated the inside, even when his team wasn't scoring, and finished with 10 pts and 13 rebs. That was more than three times as many rebounds as anyone on Orange Crush! He also blocked a pair of shots, and made 4 of his 6 field goal attempts.

3 pm: Spot Up (El Camino) 48, Valley Blue (Irvine Valley) 42

SG Anthony Brown had a spectacular game with 22 pts on 9 of 11 shooting to lead Spot Up to the win. Brown also added 2 asts and 2 steals and was the only player for Spot Up to score in double figures. PF Billy Stone had a solid effort with 7 pts and 5 rebs, while Ctr Michael Banks patrolled the lane, grabbing a game-high 7 boards and blocking 2 shots.

Valley Blue was led by Ctr Imani Mackie, who posted team-bests of 10 pts and 6 rebs. PGs Dustin Price (3 pts, 3 asts, 1 turnover) and Trevonte Nelson (2 pts, 4 asts, 3 steals) both had solid games. PF Kyle Hogan came off the bench and contributed 7 pts and 6 rebs.

5 pm: N-Flight (Pasadena) 54, 57/5 Frwy (Santa Ana) 43

N-Flight got several strong efforts to post a decisive win over 57/5 Frwy. SF Deon Marcus led all scorers with 14 pts, including 2 threes, and also garnered 7 rebs. PG Garrett Pickens had a superb game with 8 pts and 7 asts, while committing just 1 turnover. Sharpshooter Caleb Rouse came off the bench to made all 4 of his shot attempts, including 3 threes, to add 11 pts.

And continuing with the theme of the weekend, Pasadena big man Mackenzie Clark patrolled the inside. The 6-10, 270-pound pivot made 4 of 5 shots for 10 pts and generally disupted anything the 57/7s tried on offense.

The 57/5s were led by PG Darrell Jenkins, who had 12 pts and 2 asts. PF Chris Childress made all 3 of his shot attempts, grabbed 4 rebs, dished out 2 asts and finished with 6 pts.

7 pm: Inland Empire (San Bernardino Valley) 51, The Bolts (Cypress) 37

Once again, it was the dominance of a big man that proved the difference as Inland Empire's 6-10, 300-pound Jabbar Young ran roughshod over The Bolts. Young made 7 of 11 shots, finishing with 17 pts and 11 rebs for the winners. And he was a key to the defense that held The Bolts to a field goal percentage of 29.4.

SF Keaire Mims came off the bench to add 10 pts, while SG Rummel Clark and SF Jacob Johnson each added 7 pts and 4 rebs. PG Sam Funn didn't score (he only took 1 shot) but dished out 4 asts and grabbed 3 steals.

The Bolts were led by PF Sam Davis, who had 15 pts including 3 threes. SG Greg Crenshaw had 10 pts and 7 rebs.

8 pm: Glendora (Citrus) 49, Say No (West LA) 35

In the weekend's finale, Glendora got off to a terrible start but did little wrong after that in a most impressive 14-point win. The winners trailed 17-6 in the early going, but cut that margin to just 2 at 23-21 at the half, and completely took over in the second half.

Once again, it was a big man that keyed things as Glendora's Mark Kelley posted game highs of 16 pts, 6 rebs and 2 blocks. But he got plenty of help. SG Dionse Cox had 9 pts, 4 rebs and 4 asts. SF Jeremy Black added 7 pts, 2 asts and 2 steals. SF Steve Thompson added 6 pts including a three, and PF Jason McClure contributed 3 pts and tied Kelley for game honors with 6 rebs. After the bad start, Glendora outscored Say No 43-18 over the game's final 30 minutes.

Say No jumped out to the early lead largely on the shooting of Ctr Dado Kabov, who finished with 10 pts including 2 threes. SF Zac Jordan and SF Kennith Irby eacy added 8 pts. But Say No shot just 30% from the field for the game and was also outrebounded 32-25, which proved to be a fatal combination.
