11 am: Sehorn's (Yuba) 51, Cobblestone (Southern Idaho) 46
In the marquee matchup of the day, Sehorn's jumped out to a 16-point lead early in the second half, saw Cobblestone rally to within a point in the final seconds, but ultimately hold on to become the only California team to beat the out-of-state powerhouse.
Sehorn's led by 5 at 24-19 at the half, but pushed the lead to 37-21 with under 8 minutes to play. Then came the Cobblestone comeback, led by PG Shaun Davis, whose defensive pressure disrupted the Sehorn's ability to get the ball across the halfcourt line. He had 5 steals, 3 asts and 11 pts during the comeback and finished with 17 pts and 6 asts overall.
A layup by Davis closed the gap to 3 at 41-38 with 59 seconds left. Following a FT by Sehorn's Brian Videau made it 43-38, Davis nailed a three to close the gap to 2. Again, Cobblestone was forced to foul, and again Videau nailed the resulting FT, making it 45-41. This time the ball went to Ctr Ali Traore, who sank a hook shot to make it 45-43 with 23 seconds left. Once again Videau was fouled, but this time he missed the free throw. In came Ctr Zach Andrews for the putback, making it 47-43.
But Davis wasn't finished yet, driving to the basket, making the layup and drawing a foul on the play. When he made the ensuing FT, the score was 47-46 with 15 seconds left. Again, Cobblestone was forced to foul, and they sent Sehorn's SF Adam Snyder to the line. Snyder made the shot, making it 49-46, but that left a 3-point margin that Cobblestone could erase with a single shot.
Davis had one last chance to tie, but his attempted three was heavily contested. The shot hit the outside of the rim, and though he tried to lean in and draw the foul (a la Reggie Miller), no whistle sounded until Sehorn's Zach Andrews had the rebound safely tucked away. Andrews sank the ensuing FT for the final 51-46 margin.
Snyder led Sehorn's with 12 pts, but it was a balanced offensive attack for the winners. Andrews had 11, posting the double-double with his 13 rebs, and Thornton also had 11 pts. Videau added 9 pts and 10 boards.
In addition to Davis, the other double-figure scorer for Cobblestone was the 6-10 Traore, who had 10 pts. 6-11 Mohammed Kone had 4 pts and 6 rebs. Backup Ctr Tim Gould came off the bench and added 6 pts and 3 rebs.
