AUGUST 3 @ Nike Real Run: Bo Outlaw (South Plains JC/Univ of Houston/now with the Phoenix Suns) scored 40 pts and grabbed 25 rebs for Smith & Associates in the championship game, but it wasn't quite enough as his team lost, 101-100, before a packed house in the championship. Both totals were far and away game-highs, and Outlaw scored the go-ahead basket with 47 secs left to give his team a 99-98 lead. Boston Celtic star Paul Pierce nailed a 3-pointer with 3 secs left to win it for Carson Hilton. Rondell Mingo (Compton CC/Wyoming) got significant playing time off the bench for the winners, registering 8 rebs, 2 asts and 6 pts. Baron Davis (New Orleans) and Ricky Davis (Cleveland) also played in one of the most exciting games I've seen in some time.

AUGUST 3 @ Say No Classic: PG Marcus Banks (Dixie College/UNLV) led The Players to a perfect 11-0 record and the 2002 Say No Classic championship with another stellar performance. Banks finished with game-highs of 29 pts, 11 rebs and 6 asts in the 99-86 win over the defending champions, Hank’s Top Prospects. PF Armand Thomas (Compton CC/CS Northridge) scored 13 pts and grabbed 7 rebs for the winners; he also threw down four monster dunks that got the packed house rocking. Jonathan Oliver (Ventura/USC) started at Ctr for Hank’s Top Prospects and helped them take a 26-21 after the first quarter, scoring 10 pts and grabbing 4 rebs in the opening frame. Oliver finished with 15 pts and 6 rebs on the night. Marquis Poole (Mt. SAC/Idaho State) started at PG for Hank’s Top Prospects and finished with 11 pts and 5 asts. Brandon Brooks (Indian Hills CC/USC) split the point duties with Poole and tied Banks for game honors with 6 asts. Chris Osborne (Compton CC/Arizona State) had 2 pts and 2 rebs in a reserve role.

AUGUST 2 @ Say No Classic (2 games): PG Marcus Banks (Dixie/UNLV) scored 33 pts and added 6 rebs and 5 asts to lead The Players to their 10th straight win and a berth in the finals. Banks was spectacular and led all scorers in the 88-78 victory, which raises the team's mark to 10-0. PF Armand Thomas (Compton CC/CS Northridge) added 8 pts plus 8 rebs for the winners. SG Nate Daniels (Broward County CC) scored 23 pts including 3 threes for Hank's Big Time in a losing cause. Daniels scored 13 of his points in the 4th quarter but it wasn't enough to overcome the UNLV duo of Banks and Dalron Johnson. In the first semi-final, Marquis Poole (Mt. San Antonio/Idaho State) started at PG and contributed 9 pts and 7 asts for Hank's Top Prospects in their 101-87 semifinal win over Grace Salvatori's Waves, a team made up mostly of players from Pepperdine. Jonathan Oliver (Ventura/USC) added 6 pts and 3 rebs from off the bench, while backup PG Brandon Brooks (Indian Hills CC/USC) had 4 pts and 4 asts for the winners. Hank's Top Prospects (8-3) will face The Players as part of Nike's Championship Saturday tomorrow at West LA College at 6 pm.

JULY 31 @ SF PRO-AM: Chabot alumn Eric Crookshank (now at Idaho State) led the Believers to a 124-84 win and their first playoff berth since 1996. Crookshank's 25 pts and 9 rebs were team-highs in their win over a depleted Bay Raiders squad. Amiel Vega (Merritt) had a big game off the bench with 22 pts and 5 rebs. Leydaer Chapman (Merritt) also had a huge effort with 17 pts, 4 rebs and 5 asts. Kameron Gray (Chabot) had a pair of assists in limited action.

JULY 30 @ SF PRO-AM: A couple of JC Alumns helped South Bay to an 89-79 win. Jamie Holmes (West Valley/Santa Clara) had 25 pts and 9 rebs while Richard Thorpe (Merritt/Langston) had 8 pts, 7 rebs and 7 asts. For East Bay, two Hawaii-bound JC grads named Sykes shared the PG position: Dante (Skyline/Hawaii Pacific) finished with 2 pts, 6 rebs and 4 asts while Bryon (Delta/Chaminade) scored 3 pts. The loss by East Bay, despite the presence of the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Lamond Murray, keeps alive the Oakland Believers’ chances of making the playoffs for the first time since 1996.

JULY 29 @ SF Pro-Am. Marek Ondara (formerly of Skyline/Mira Costa/UC Irvine) scored 13 pts and grabbed a team-high 10 rebs to help SF City to a 111-85 win over Bay City. Jono Metzger-Jones (West Valley, now at Univ of the Pacific) scored 7 pts, and Horace Richmond (formerly at Skyline) added 2 pts in reserve roles for the winners. Cris Kelley (Monterey, now at Sonoma State) started at PG for Bay City and played a very strong game (he finished with 13 pts, 5 rebs and 5 asts) even if he was also on the wrong end of a highlight-reel move put on by the Warriors' Jason Richardson. On a breakaway with only Kelley back, Richardson baited Kelley into trying for the steal only to pull the ball away and throw it behind Kelley's back, and then he darted over and grabbed the ball and in one motion went up for the monster jam. Well don't feel too bad Cris...the guy won the NBA dunk contest this year! David Bell (Porterville, now at Montana) started at SG and finished with 12 pts, 5 rebs and 5 asts. Reggie Williams (formerly San Jose CC/Cal State Dominguez Hills) added 11 pts and 9 rebs off the bench.

JULY 20 @ Say No Classic (4 games). Danny Lambert (Irvine Valley) helped CABC overcome a 6-point deficit entering the 4th quarter and beat Entertainment Tonight, 62-54. Lambert played nearly the entire 4th qtr, scoring 5 pts and grabbing 5 boards. Jaqay Carlyle saw limited action for E.T. but did not score. In a later game, Nate Daniels (Broward County CC) scored 14 pts and grabbed 7 rebs in a 79-77 win by Hank's Big Time over YBFF. Daniels started at SG for the winners. In the next game, Armand Thomas (Compton CC/CS-Northridge) scored 12 pts and hauled in 4 rebs for The Players in a 77-68 win over West Coast Sports. Later on, DeMond Huff (Cuesta/Coppin St.) scored a game-high 19 pts and pulled down 8 rebs to lead San Bernardino to a 74-66 comeback victory over Top Flight. Eric Swan (San Jose CC/CS-San Bernardino) had 6 pts, 4 rebs and 2 asts in the game as San Bernardino overcame an 18-point 3rd qtr deficit to post the win. Mark Treadwell (LA Trade Tech) scored 8 pts, grabbed 12 rebs and dished out a team-best 6 asts for Top Flight, which had no substitutes available (hence the collapse in the last 6 minutes). Frank Essis (Chaffey/CS-FullertoN) added 13 pts and 6 rebs. And in the nightcap, former LA Southwest teammates Curtis Millage (now at Az. State) and Eric Knight (now at Portland) helped Team Say No to yet another win, this time topping a team made up mostly of Loyola Marymount players, 73-55. Millage started at SG and had 10 pts with 6 rebs, while Knight scored 9 pts in a reserve role. The win moved Team Say No to 7-1 and ensured them a first-round bye in the playoffs, which begin next week.

JULY 10 @ DADA Summer Pro League. Kei Madison (Okaloosa-Walton CC) tied for team-bests with 20 pts and 9 rebs to help the Lakers top the Warriors, 106-93. Jamario Moon (Meridian CC) started at SG and scored 11 pts plus 7 rebs. Jannero Pargo (Neosho County/Arkansas) started at PG and scored 17 pts on 7 of 12, and handed out 3 asts. Larry Reid (Northern/Kansas State) backed him up and finished with 2 pts and 2 asts. Aaron McGhee (Vincennes CC/Oklahoma) came off the bench for the Warriors and scored 10 pts while grabbing 4 rebs.

JULY 7 @ Say No Classic (3 games). Marko Milailovic (Santa Monica) continued his strong play with 11 pts, 6 rebs and 5 asts for the Hoopmasters in a 99-74 loss to YBFF. Keith Everage (Saddleback) had a big game as well with 16 pts and 8 rebs as the starting ctr. The point total tied for team honors. Ronald Eskridge (Santa Monica) came off the bench to add 14 pts and a team-best 10 rebs. Terrell Young (Allan Hancock) started at PF but left the game early with an ankle injury. Chris Evers (West Hills) grabbed a rebound and handed out an assist in limited action. In the next game, Demond Huff (Cuesta) started at ctr for the CS San Bernardino team in their 78-73 loss to a team of Pepperdine players. He scored 2 pts while grabbing 5 rebs. Later on, the LASW-alumni backcourt of Curtis Millage (now at Arizona State) and Eric Knight (now at Portland) led Team Say No to an 80-72 win over West Coast Sports. Each scored 8 pts; Knight handed out 4 asts while Millage had 3 dimes before leaving with a knee injury (which was not believed to be serious).

JULY 6 @ Say No Classic (2 games). Brian Pruitt (El Camino) started at PF for Hank's Team and tied for team honors with 17 pts in an 81-74 win over Trauma. Pruitt also grabbed 6 boards. ECC teammate David Warsaw also saw some action for the winners and contributed 4 pts and 3 rebs. Ryan Abrahams (LA Valley/Glendale/Hawaii-Hilo) started at SG for Trauma and scored a game-high 22 pts including 3 3-pointers. His late scoring barrage brought his team to within 3 pts in the final minute after they had trailed by 15 with under 4 mins to go. Quentin Harvey (Compton) added 11 pts and 3 rebs off the bench. In a later game, Gary Colbert (Dixie/Pepperdine) started at PG for Top Flight and led the team with 14 pts and 4 asts. But it wasn't enough, as they fell to Entertainment Tonight, 70-54. Jaqay Carlyle (Mesa CC) scored 2 pts and grabbed 2 boards in limited playing time for the winners.

JUNE 29 @ Say No Classic (3 games). Marko Milailovic and Ronald Eskridge (both from Santa Monica) made the difference for the Hoopmasters in their 89-77 win over a team made up primarily of Loyola Marymount players. Both Corsairs entered the game to start the 2nd quarter with their team trailing, 21-17, and immediately spurred them to take a lead they never relinquished. Milailovic finished with 21 pts, 6 rebs and 4 asts while Eskridge tossed in 6 pts to go with 11 rebs and 4 asts. Keith Everage (Saddleback) had a big game as well, leading all scorers with 23 pts for the winners. LaQuan Tolbert (Santa Monica) started at forward and scored 10 pts while grabbing 7 rebs. Terrell Young (Allan Hancock) started at Ctr and finished with 10 pts, 5 asts and a game-high 12 rebs. Chris Evers (West Hills) added 2 pts for the winners. Gary Colbert (Dixie/Pepperdine) came off the bench to contribute 5 pts and 4 asts. And Frank Essis (Chaffey/CS Fullerton) scored 3 pts and pulled down 4 boards in limited action. In a later game, Bron Groomes (SBVC/CS Fullerton) recorded team-bests of 18 pts and 8 rebs for Eric's Hoops Playaz in their 82-64 loss to Team Say No. Roberto Stukes (San Bernardino Valley) started at SG and was team runner-up behind Groomes with 12 pts. The team's third-highest scorer was Pape Sow (Chaffey/CS Fullerton), who scored 10 pts and nabbed 5 rebs. Ronald Roundtree (Riverside/CS Fullerton) finished with 7 pts. But Team Say No, led by Cal's standout guard Brian Wethers, started the game on an 18-0 run and was never really challenged.

JUNE 22 @ Say No Classic (3 games). Jonathan Oliver (Ventura/USC) started at Ctr for Hank's Top Prospects and scored 5 pts and grabbed 6 rebs to help them to a 69-59 win over Eric's Hoops Playaz. Marquis Poole (Mt. SAC/Idaho State) added 5 pts and 2 rebs while John Galbreath (Big Bend/UC Riverside) scored 4 pts and grabbed 7 boards in reserve roles. Bron Groomes (SBVC/Cal-Fullerton) scored a team-best 16 pts and grabbed 7 rebs for Eric's Hoops Playaz. Roberto Stukes (SBVC) scored 15 pts and handed out a game-high 6 asts. Pape Sow (Chaffey/Cal-Fullerton) started at Ctr and scored 9 pts while hauling in a game-high 14 rebs. Ronald Roundtree (Riverside/Cal-Fullerton) scored 8 pts and grabbed 8 boards. JUNE 20 @ SF Pro-Am. The Oakland Believers continued their losing ways, but found a couple bright spots in their pair of Chabot College guards. Kameron Gray was the 6th sub off the bench, but ended up tying for team honors with 13 pts and game honors with 7 asts. Meanwhile, Anthony Shavies entered the game just before Gray and put on quite a show as well with 10 pts, 5 rebs and 5 asts. He, Gray and ex-DVC star Toby Merchant (11 pts) keyed a late comeback that almost enabled the Believers to pull the upset. They ended up losing to Dream Team, 90-80. Chris Adams (CCSF) started at Ctr for the winners and totalled 8 pts and 6 rebs despite being plagued with foul trouble throughout the game. CCSF teammates Mike Travis and Perker Meeks each saw limited playing time and contributed 2 pts apiece. The JC alumni in this game are too numerous to detail, but they ranged from Merchant to Edward "Topper" Allen (Skyline in the 80's). Allen, a veritable legend in SF Pro-Am, tossed in 14 pts and dished out 6 asts for the winners.

JUNE 19 @ SF Pro-Am. Dante Sykes (Skyline) scored 4 pts and added 2 rebs and 4 asts in limited action for East Bay in their 91-88 loss to Bay Pride. Jelani Williams (Los Medanos) scored 2 pts with 2 rebs and an assist for East Bay. Bryon Sykes (SJ Delta) grabbed a rebound and dished out 2 asts in limited action. Bay Pride rallied from a 15-point halftime deficit and won on an Horry-esque 3-pointer by onetime Indiana Pacer Richard Morton. Julius Hicks, who played at West Valley College before attending Oregon, led all rebounders with 10 boards and scored 13 pts for the winners. Dan Trammell (DVC before attending Montana) also saw some playing time for Bay Pride.

JUNE 18 @ SF Pro-Am. Vince Fowler (CCSF) came through in the clutch to lift the Bay Raiders to a 90-89 win over Bay City. The Raiders trailed by a point when Fowler took the ball and drove towards the basket in the game's final seconds. His 12-foot jumper was off the mark, but he drew a foul on the play and calmly nailed both FTs with 5 seconds left to provide the tying and winning points. He finished with 9 pts, 9 rebs and 5 asts on the night. Eto Onyengecha (Contra Costa) started at PF for the Raiders and scored 14 pts while grabbing a game-high 12 rebs. Maurice Braxton (Contra Costa) started at SF and tallied 12 pts, 4 rebs and 2 asts. Also, a couple of JC alumns saw action. And Bryan Thomasson (Skyline - later played at Nevada-Reno) scored 11 pts for the Raiders.

Seth Sundberg, who played at Canada in the mid-90's, started at Ctr for City and finished with 9 pts and 6 rebs.
