Summer 2005

Over the summer, whenever I saw someone with ties to the JC world, I've posted the highlights on this page. This summer began with the Beach Basketball Camp at the Long Beach Pyramid June 24-25-26. Then it was off to the LA Pro City College League, which this year has a division in West LA and a division in Pomona. On July 7th I made what would be my only appearance at the venerable San Francisco Pro City league. I also got down to the pyramid for a day at the SPL on July 19th. And of course there's also the Southern California Showcase, which tood place July 30-31 at the Great American Sports Center in Anaheim (and gets its own page - link below). The summer ended with an incredible QUADRUPLE-OVERTIME game in the championship of the LA Pro City Pro league at West LA College. I've also included a box score from that historic event. But then came the Fall Showcase in October, and even though it wasn't technically summer anymore...well, summer is really a state of mind anyway, eh?

August 6: LA Pro City - Pro
at West LA College - League Championship

SG Ryan Abrahams (Glendale/LA Valley/Hawaii-Hilo) scored a team-high 28 pts, including 4 threes, to lead Pasadena to a 123-121 quadruple-overtime win over Smith & Associates in the league championship game. Ctr Alex Carcamo (Santa Monica/E. Washington) had a strong all-around game with 23 pts, 9 rebs and 7 asts for the winners in what is believed to be the first 4-OT game in the history of the league.

Pasadena trailed by as many as 24 points in the second quarter before rallying in the second half and taking a 63-61 lead on a three by Abrahams with just over 2 minutes left in the third quarter. In a sign of things to come, the game was tied at 70 entering the fourth quarter. Another Abrahams three with 39 seconds left in regulation tied it at 92, sending the game to its first OT. Smith made up a 4-point deficit in the final 15 seconds of the first extra session to tie it at 99 and send the game to a second OT. After two OTs, it was still tied, this time at 106-106. Then Abrahams again came through for Pasadena, draining a pair of FTs with 2.2 seconds left in the 3rd OT to make it 114-114 and send it to the 4th OT where Pasadena finally prevailed.

JC Legend Ctr Bo Outlaw (South Plains TX/Houston/Phoenix Suns) had an incredible game in defeat with 43 pts, 19 rebs and 7 asts. Outlaw's basket as the horn sounded at the end of the 2nd OT kept the game going a bit longer. Outlaw also had a huge game in the 2002 championship of the Real Run with 40 pts, 25 rebs and 5 asts - only to see the Celtics' Paul Pierce nail a three in the final seconds to win the game for his Carson Hilton team.

And SF Randall Harding (Contra Costa/CSUB) had a solid game with 9 pts, 7 rebs and 6 asts before a nightmarish final 30 seconds (2 missed front ends of 1-and-1's and a charging foul) hastened Bakersfield losing a 7-point lead in the game's final minute and losing, 71-69. PG Jonathan Smith (Santa Monica/CS Northridge) saw limited action for the winners and scored 4 pts.

The result was that the Prospects outscored Hank's Team 19-4 in the third quarter to take 10-point lead. Johnson went to the bench with foul trouble at that point, and Hank's Team rallied to force the extra session. But in OT, Johnson scored a basket, dished out an assist and grabbed a pair of rebounds. And his pass to E. Ibekwe ended up leading directly to the win when UConn's Marcus Williams sank a free throw (Ibekwe was fouled while trying to catch the pass and missed the ensuing free throw, but because the foul was Bobby Jones' 7th personal foul HTP was awarded an extra free throw, which Williams sank for the win).
