2009-10 Top 100 JC Players in California

Here are my choices for the 2009-10 Top 100 JC players in California. The only requirement is that I have to have seen them play (either during the regular season or during the summer - at some point - at the JC level, in HS or in a summer league such as the Say No or the SF Pro-Am).

While this is of course my subjective opinion, mine may be the most informed opinion around since I doubt anyone else has seen as many teams play this year as I have.

Players are listed by the position that they played most of the time at the JC level. Most players in California JCs play one position “larger” than they are likely to play at the 4-year level (since we have so many guards and not so many big men around here).

64 different schools are represented.

Three schools placed four players each on the list. San Bernardino Valley leads the way with 5 players chosen; Citrus and Saddleback have 4 players each.

Players are listed alphabetically.

In addition to the Top 100, the Honorable Mention section is a list of very good players that I seriously considered for inclusion on the Top 100, as well as a post-script with a couple of players who could easily have been on these lists.

Here's a little more info...

By position -
PG - 20
SG - 17
SF - 17
PF - 27
Ctr - 20
(I didn't allocate spots by position - that's just how it worked out)

23 freshmen - noted by (f)
78 sophomores

And yep that's 101...if the Big Ten conference can have 11 teams my Top 100 list can have 101 names, eh?

What Might Have Been:

Dallas Rutherford, SG, Moorpark - left the team in February for personal reasons. I've covered Dallas' games since he was a freshman at Hillcrest Christian HS and have always liked his game - kind of a Jason Terry quality - and thought he'd be a good fit at Moorpark. On the court he was, and would have been an easy choice for the Top 100 list. He's had some detours but I hope it all works out for him, partly because I have to pull for preachers' kids with the initials DR.

D.J. Wright, Ctr, Mt. San Jacinto - was preceded by the reputation of being perhaps the best player in all JC basketball (not just California) but arrived overweight and never really found his groove before leaving the team in December. Word is he wants to play overseas. He has the talent, but he'll have to get into a lot better shape and compete a lot harder than he did here to make that work out.

Tyrone Nance, SF, LA Trade Tech - one of my favorites, a guy who really worked to improve his game from his time at Crenshaw HS, and a tough competitor as well. Tyrone was a candidate for the Top 100 list and a shoo-in for the Honorable Mention list, but left the team in January to pursue a career in the ministry. Best of luck to him in his future endeavors!
