MORLEAU GET 3 POINTS IN SLUG FEST

-- Ethan Moreau had two goals and an assist, Marty Reasoner had a goal and an assist, and linemates Ryan Smyth, Mike Comrie and Anson Carter all scored Saturday night as the Oilers beat the Devils 6-3.

"That's how wacky a league it is,'' Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "Anybody is vulnerable. We come in against the best defensive team in hockey and score six goals when we're not scoring.''

The Oilers had scored 31 goals in 13 games when they arrived to face the Devils and Martin Brodeur, who had a league best 1.54 goals against average. However, they tallied six times on 21 shots.

"It's always nice to get a lot of goals, especially against a team like New Jersey that hasn't given up a lot,'' said Comrie, whose breakaway goal gave Edmonton some breathing room after New Jersey cut a 3-0 deficit to a goal early in the third period. "It's a confidence-builder for us.''

Jussi Markkanen played an outstanding game for the Oilers, making 36 saves. He had a scary moment in the first few minutes when his left wrist was cut by the skate blade of Devils center Scott Gomez.

"It's easier to stand behind the guys when we are leading like that,'' Markkanen said. "I was happy for the guys who finally got some goals.''

Brian Rafalski, Christian Berglund and John Madden scored for the Devils, who have struggled at home, posting a 4-3 record. They are 4-1 on the road.

"Right now we are making it a grind in our own building and we have to change that,'' said Brodeur, who beat Philadelphia 1-0 Thursday night.

The Devils were a virtual no show for the opening 24 minutes and they fell behind 3-0 against a team that was playing its second game in as many nights.

Berglund's goal early in the third period cut the lead to 3-2, but Comrie scored on a breakaway and Carter capped a 3-on-1 with his linemates to put the game out of reach.

Smyth got the scoring underway at 3:42 of the first period, snapping a shot over Brodeur's shoulder just 9 seconds after Madden was penalized. It was the first power-play goal in seven games against the Devils, who had killed off 23 straight penalties.

Reasoner, who went unclaimed in the waiver draft and spent most of this past week playing for Hamilton of the AHL, stretched the lead to 2-0 with 2:31 left in the first period. He took a pass in close from Moreau and got his first of the season 20 seconds after the Devils killed a penalty to Joe Nieuwendyk.

Moreau, who would add an empty-net goal, scored in close at 4:37 of the second period after taking a drop pass from Reasoner.

"They got some breaks and put the puck in the net,'' Brodeur said. "It's hard when you fall behind the 8-ball. We had to take chances and they capitalized.''

The Devils got a little feisty after the goal and made it a game.

Rafalski scored on a power play with 3:15 left in the second period, and Berglund scored alone in front at 2:34 of the third.

After Comrie and Carter scored to make it 5-2, Madden scored on a power-play rebound with 4:18 to go. Edmonton took only 21 shots.

The Devils came into the game with the NHL's worst power play, having scored on 3 of 51 extra-man chances. They were 2-for-7 against Edmonton.
