Opals' Mothers Role

Australian Basketballer Michelle Brogan has spoken today about her decision to give up a career in the WNBA to stay in Australia with her baby son.

Recently divorced, the Opal’s silver medallist chose the custody of her 19-month-old son ahead of her place with the Phoenix Mercury.

“The choice between family and career was not hard not when it comes to my son, so I have chosen to stay in Australia this season through personal circumstances” Brogan said.

Instead she is captaining a young Opals Team in Osaka for the East Asian Games.

At age 28, Brogan has been tagged the “mother” of the Team, a role she is proud to accept.

“It is everyone’s dream to captain an Australian Team and I am very proud of that honour. As for these girls, they are young but I think some of them will push their way onto the Team for Athens in 2004”.

The Opals play their first match on Saturday against the powerful Chinese Team. At training today they worked on a special defensive drill to counter the Asians love of three point shooting.

“The Asians are renowned for three point shots. They give up layups virtually to have three point shots. It is a totally different style to the way we play in Australia so we are working on the Asian style of play,” she said.
