Tomlinson
plans to quit if Tigers
are out of WNBL |

Tuesday 10 April 2001
As
his club resumed its
battle for survival,
Melbourne Tigers coach
Ray Tomlinson yesterday
said he would end his
20-year association with
the Women's National
Basketball League side if
it was not admitted next
season.
The
Tigers, who Tomlinson
helped found in 1981,
initially missed the WNBL
2000-2001 season cut but
scraped in at the last
minute thanks to an
understanding sponsor.
But, uncertainty over
their future ensured a
player exodus, leaving
six new faces in the
10-strong line-up and a
big question mark over
trump card and Sydney
Olympics silver medallist
Michelle Brogan (nee
Griffiths).
Brogan
finally joined the Tigers
halfway through the
season due to personal
problems but Melbourne
still finished last on
the WNBL ladder with a
3-18 win-loss season
record.
Tomlinson
said the club was
battling hard to avoid a
repeat of the pre-season
chaos. "If we don't
make the league this
year, I won't be there,
that's for sure, and I
won't be there I think
ever again," he
said.
"But
Melbourne is one of the
best-known clubs in
Australia - if you can't
market the Melbourne
Tigers, who can you
market?
"It's
something we have to come
to grips with and we have
to solve the
problems."
