In 1987 Rich aided Milford to a third place team finish in cross country as he placed 9th overall at the Ohio State Meet, and earned All-State recognition. That year he also was named to the First Team All-Cincinnati by the Post and Enquirer, and was named to the Midwest Meet of Champions. In the spring Rich placed 11th at the State Meet, and was named to the Second Team All- City. In his senior year, Rich was the Ohio State Runner-Up in the 1600 meters to future American Record Holder (in the 5k) Bob Kennedy. Rich was MVP of his track team, and was named First Team All-City. He qualified to the Midwest Meet of Champions in the 1600 meters and won with a time of 4:16. His high school personal bests include:

   At Morehead State Rich was a member of the 1988 OVC Championship Team. He was two-time First Team All-OVC with third and fifth place finishes. Rich earned Academic All-OVC honors in 1990. In 1991 he was the OVC Indoor Mile Champion with a time of 4:17. Also that year he was named the Marshall Twilight Invitational Most Outstanding Athlete with his 1:56 800m run and 3:55 1500m run. Rich currently holds the Morehead State school record in the 5000m at 14:48.6 and 1500m 3:51.7. His college personal bests include:
