Beavers was originally chosen by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 1999 draft following his senior year at Woodbridge High in Irvine, California. Sardinha was picked by the Rockies in the 42nd round last year.

Beavers concluded the 2002 campaign with a 5-5 record and 6.07 earned-run average. In 18 appearances (16 starts), the senior left-hander logged 89.0 innings, allowed 122 hits, 60 earned runs, walked 32 and struck out 45.
