Padres agree to terms with 2002 second-round pick Michael Johnson

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres tonight agreed to terms with first baseman Michael Johnson, the club's second round draft pick (54th overall) in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft out of Clemson University. Director of Scouting Bill Gayton made the announcement.

Johnson, 22, batted .338 (67-for-198) with 11 doubles, 12 homers and 67 RBI in 58 games for the Clemson Tigers this season. He struck out just 38 times and earned 63 walks, the second-most in Clemson history. He was rated the No. 2 senior prospect and No. 22 overall prospect in the nation heading into 2003 according to Baseball America.

"We are excited to have added another key player to our organization in Michael Johnson," said Gayton. "He has put together some fine collegiate campaigns with Clemson and will definitely add another solid bat into our system."

A two-time First-Team All-ACC selection, Johnson finished his collegiate career with a .344 batting average, 52 doubles, four triples, 58 homers and 213 RBI in 235 games for the Tigers. The 6-2, 215-pound infielder drew more walks (169) than strikeouts (168) while posting a .465 on-base percentage and a .636 slugging percentage. His 58 home runs fell just one shy of the Clemson record and tied for fifth in ACC history.

Johnson, who was named ACC Player of the Week in late April, also received a number of honors off the field. He was twice named to the ACC Academic honor roll for the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons and was inducted in the National Honor Society after being on the Georgetown High School (SC) honor roll from 1995-97.

Recommended by Padres scout Mike Rikard, Johnson is scheduled to join San Diego's Single-A Lake Elsinore affiliate in approximately a week. His 2000-02 Clemson teammate, Khalil Greene, the Padres' 2002 first-round draft pick (13th overall), is currently batting .264 with three homers and 17 RBI in 53 games at Double-A Mobile.
