Bloomington, Ind. - Junior center fielder Kennard Jones has a choice to make now. Either he can come back to Indiana for his senior season, or make the trip to join the San Diego Padres after begin drafted on Tuesday. The San Diego Padres made the 2002 Big Ten Tri-Player of the Year the 85th overall pick in the third round of Tuesday’s Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft in New York City.
“I am excited,” said Jones. “I’m excited and when it was announced my mom was crying. It’s great. I was feeling pretty anxious and now I am just excited. I thought I was going in the second round, but it doesn’t matter. I am just happy to be drafted.”
Jones, first team All-Big Ten outfielder, led the Big Ten Conference regular season in hitting with a .411 overall average. He also led the league in hits (88), runs (72) and was second in stolen bases (22).
