Padres first baseman Paul McAnulty was named the Pioneer Baseball League TOPPS Player of the Month for August today.

McAnulty, a 12th-round draft choice out of Long Beach State University, hit .344 with six home runs and 21 RBIs in August. He also stroked 12 of his league-leading 29 doubles in August and stole four bases, despite playing much of the month with a broken toe on his right foot.

Overall, McAnulty finished the season with a .379 batting average, and was the first Idaho Falls player to lead the Pioneer League in batting in 27 years, since Richard Brewster did it in 1975. McAnulty also led the Padres in the power categories with eight homers and 51 runs batted in, and accomplished all of that while walking more times than he struck out. Finally, his 29 doubles tied the single-season Pioneer League record.

The native of Oxnard, Calif. was the only Padres player voted onto the Pioneer League All-Star team as a starter, getting the nod at the designated hitter position
