DAVIS, Calif. --- UC Davis pitchers Luke Steidlmayer and Greg Bruso became the first pair of Aggie teammates drafted in the same year since the 1994 season as Steidlmayer was selected in the 8th round by the San Diego Padres and Bruso in the 16th round by the San Francisco Giants during the first day of the 2002 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Tuesday.
?
Steidlmayer, a junior from Colusa, was drafted in the 45th round of the 2001 draft by the Texas Rangers, but returned to UC Davis for his junior season. This past year Steidlmayer posted an 8-4 record while tying for the California Collegiate Athletic Association lead with 100 strikeouts, matching Bruso for the conference lead. He recorded three double-figure strikeout games on the year, including a career-high 16 at Grand Canyon on March 28. Last season, Steidlmayer was named Second Team All-America and California Collegiate Athletic Association and West Region Pitcher of the Year.
