Rossington At The Movies

Universal Pictures announced recently that they are to make a film of the incredible events of the 2000 Barnsley Minor League.

‘Going Up’ is the title of what could be this summer’s big box office smash, depicting the fantastic victory of the American team, Rossington ASC, over Selby Tigersharks to clinch the Barnsley Minor League Division 3 title.

Will Smith heads an all star cast as Glen Wilson the young coach in his first year at the helm of the American swimming club out for revenge after the death of his girlfriend who was killed by a Tiger shark while swimming in the River Ouse at Selby. After victory he eventually finds love in the arms of one of his star open age swimmers played by Cameron Diaz.

Danny DeVito is ‘A’ Squad coach Tony Heppel, who helps guide the club to the trophy, with Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Keanu Reaves, Jennifer Aniston and Tara Reid playing some of the heroic Rossington swimmers

Ray Winston is set to star as Harry ‘ The Grinder’ Graham the dastardly Englishman who coaches the Selby team and forces them to wear special motorised trunks and costumes to try and cheat the heroic American team out of victory.

Director Steven Spielberg defended the film-makers’ decision to focus on the American contribution to the victory over Selby, and also the inaccuracy and over dramatisation of certain events. ‘It goes without saying that we have to make some alterations in order to make the story work on film. However I hope that the final product will be a true and accurate account of the spirit that lived over the course of that year.’
