Ara Towns of Bethel was named outstanding female performer after capturing the 100, 200 and anchoring the second place 4x100 relay. The girls 800 was a loaded event with 3 national caliber runners. Elizabeth Bayne of Kecoughtan took a strategic race from Nicole Cook of Petersburg and Menchvilles' Pitt bound, Janine Jones. The winning time was a "slow" 2:15.84, but only .94 seconds separated 1st and 3rd. Menchville showed its relay strength in taking the 4x100 at 47.80 and the 4x400 in 3:50.52. In the field N.S.I. indoor champ Caroline Harvey took her specialty at 18'6" against a field that included Virginia "AA" champ Ebony Foster (3rd 17'9") of Jefferson Forest. | ||||||
In the boys competition, Wilbur Hargrove of tiny Bluestone H.S. was named outstanding performer. In the 100, Wilbur bested a strong field that included "AAA" 55 champ Jerome Mathis of Petersburg. His 10.59 just missed Casey Combests' meet record of 10.53. Hargrove took the 200 (21.80) and finished second to Anthony Pelham (47.56) of Heritage (N.N.). In the 400, the first four places were 47.90 or better! In the boys 800, State "AAA" champ Curtis Parker of Woodside (N.N.) bested a strong field at 1:54.71. In the 3200, super sophomore Bobby Lockhart of "AA" Handley aced "AAA" champ Austin Smith (junior) of Midlothian and "AAA" runner up Matt Keally (soph) of Ocean Lakes at 9:11.65. Heritage showed its relay prowess by taking the 4x100 (42.31) and 4x400 in 3:13.70. The latter performance was the 2nd fastest time nationally to that date. That time ended up 5th on the Dyestat list. | ||||||
