Roundwood
18th Aug 2001

Course Name: Roundwood Golf Club Holes: 18 Yardage: 6685 Par: 72

Roundwood Golf Course: Nature has joined forces with an Irish course architect to create what can only be described as one of the most breathtakingly beautiful courses in Ireland.

The rolling countryside at Roundwood has been sculpted by glaciers during the last Ice Age to provide an undulating terrain with good soil and drainage. What better foundation could a course architect have to begin working with. The parkland has been harnessed and used to great effect by the architect to produce a course of beauty and a stern test of golfer`s mettle.

A cluster of small lakes in the centre of the course means that water comes into play on four holes (9,10,12 & 15). The par 5 15th presents the golfer with a daunting second shot, punishing any bravado with a watery grave for the golfball as the greenside lake consumes all but the best shots.

The surroundings at Roundwood are such, that the golfer is easily distracted, but what distractions! Nature at its most beautiful, the flora and fauna are both plentiful and a joy to look at. Wicklow, justly famous for its scenery, is at its best here and we can guarantee that you will want another round just to glimpse again some of the views from the course.

Directions
situated in the heart of County Wicklow (The Garden of Ireland), just 35 minutes drive from the ferryport at Dun Laoghaire.

Facilities
The new clubhouse will allow the golfer to unwind after a round of golf. The 19th Hole (Member's Bar & Spike Bar) and à la carte Restaurant overlook the course and spectacular scenery of County Wicklow. Visitors can also avail of the changing facilities and Pro Shop or just survey the view from the 1st floor balcony.

Martin’s away in the clouds !!!!!!
In fact he wasn’t the only one, anyone who turned up to Roundwood Golf Club on Saturday morning was in the clouds. If you want to know why then read on..................................................
It started out as a normal, run of the mill summers day in Dublin, grey skies and plenty of rain forecast. We all thought, “Not to bad…., rains not to heavy, good rain gear and I’ll be fine” but even the best rain gear in the world can’t keep you dry when your playing golf nearly 2000ft up and in the clouds (literally).

So it was great to see 24 determined “all weather” golfers turn up to play a really lovely golf course. Needless to say, the scoring wasn’t all that brilliant, 33 points by Martin Downey proving to be just enough, 2nd was Eddie Murphy with 31, next was Tony McEvoy 30 and 4th was Dara Voyles with 29. At this point I want to say how much pleasure I had finally being able to cut Martin’s handicap and it’s always nice to be able to cut Dara’s bandit handicap as well!.

There is a rumour going around that some players (no names no Paul Robinson) turned right instead of left on the 18th fairway and ended up on the 10th green, hence playing an extra 9 holes and still only scoring 22 points! When they finally arrived back in the clubhouse they said “God that was a long golf course!!” All joking aside though you have to feel sorry for Paul Grimes who normally drives to every outing, and so can’t have a pint , but this one he got a lift to , and after enduring 18 holes in the roughest of weather he was really looking forward to a well earned drink , but guess what? there was no bar in the clubhouse , but he did say that the tea was of a particularly good vintage-1998 Chateaux Lyons I think he said it was …...Anyway Arsenal won so that cheered him up a bit.

Again thanks to all who turned up and braved the elements and hopefully we’ll have better weather for the next outing in
...........Highfield on 15th September.............

See You All Then
