Wicklow
24th Feb 2001

Course Name: Wicklow Golf Club Holes: 18 Yardage: 5427 SSS: 70
Wickow Golf Club: Golf Architects Craddock and Ruddy constructed 9 new holes and re-arranged 2 of the existing holes as part of the development of the 18 hole course which was designed to the highest standard and officially opened in 1994. It is situated on the cliffs overlooking Wicklow Bay and set against the backdrop of the Wicklow mountains. The architects made full use of the natural contours and features of the terrain with each hole having its own distinguishing feature. The drive on the 380 metres par 4 6th hole locally referred to as the 'nose hole' is all carry over the craggy cliff-face and inviting sea below. The four par 3's are all world class. The 17th is 150 metres demanding a shot from an elevated tee over 2 lakes to a basin green surrounded by a high bank and inviting bunker to the right. The 7th on the other hand is 130 metres all uphill to a two-tier elevated green surrounded by a bank and furze bushes (which are a feature of the course) and strategically positioned bunkers.

Directions
The course is located within walking distance (10 mins) from the centre of Wicklow Town or a further walk (20 minutes) south along the coast to Silver Strand beaches.

Further Information
Trolley hire available. Practice and catering facilities.

Outing Report
By: Paul Berns

Wicklow has never been a golf course for the faint hearted, and with the prospect of possibly having to carry our golf bags around, and with most people suffering from
“night before syndrome” (after the “first final fling”), it was never going to be an easy round to play.

However 27 golfers turned up to play in beautiful sunshine
(proving that you can never listen to the Irish weathermen!).

The Results Were As follows

Group 1
Pos Name Comments
1st Graham Hoey It’s always great to be able to cut someone on their first outing.
2nd James Daly. Well he is the Captain!
3rd Anto O’Connor. Maybe now he’ll start playing full rounds of golf again.

Group 2
Pos Name Comments
1st Paul Robinson. Rounding off his best weekend in ages.
2nd Peter Whelan. Well he did sponsor the outing.
3rd Dara Voyles. It’s always a pleasure to be able to cut Dara.

We also had a visitor’s prize,
and this went to Paddy Lawlor, whose score,
playing off a 9 handicap, put us all to shame.

Plenty Of Other Notable Incidents Took Place, Here Are Just A Few.

A certain person (no names, no law suit) driving off on the 4th came very close
to killing a member on the 3rd green, missing his head by inches.

Willie Moran’s refusal to walk on the 11th green,
having nearly killed himself there the week before
(ask him and he might tell you the full story).

Willie Rogers and his amazing ability to play golf
despite having drank Navan dry the night before
(14 pints of bud and a bottle of gin were mentioned).

But without a doubt the person who got most value
for money was definitely John Scott,
who had the pleasure of walking on each fairway twice.

But on a serious note, if you love torturing yourself or you missed out on this round in Wicklow because of the final fling, we have booked the course again for the 17th November This Year.

Don’t forget the next outing in Balcarrick on 24th March.

See you then,
P.B.
